Kick Off: Goals galore in MLS | Only one more unbeaten club | US U-20 pre-World Cup team Here are the 15 stories we're talking about today: 1. TIMBERS EKE OUT WIN VS. NYCFC On a weekend that saw many highlight-reel goals in MLS, it was an ugly, defelected one from Dairon Asprilla that gave the Portland Timbers a 1-0 win over New York City FC on Sunday (HIGHLIGHTS). The result extended NYC's winless streak to five games, but the coach felt buoyed by the performance. The Timbers, on the other hand, supported by a large number of travelling fans, were earned a much-needed win. 2. SUBS SURGE FOR REVS Some inspired substitutions helped the New England Revolution come from a goal down to earn a 2-1 win over the Philadelphia Union (HIGHLIGHTS) on Sunday. The Union’s Raymon Gaddis took it upon himself to shoulder blame for the defeat and, while Teal Bunbury deserves a lot of praise for the Revs, there was another standout player. 3. FCD END SLUMP Fabián Castillo led the way as FC Dallas topped Toronto FC, 3-2, in a wild, weather-delayed game that went late into Saturday night (HIGHLIGHTS). FCD took a 3-0 lead in the first 30 minutes, but after a 206-minute lightning delay, Sebastian Giovinco did his best to get Toronto back into the game before the home side escaped with the points to end their mini-slump. 4. AND THEN THERE WAS ONE UNDEFEATED CLUB The New York Red Bulls are Major League Soccer's only unbeaten club after the Vancouver Whitecaps ended Real Salt Lake’s undefeated start to the season with a 1-0 win at Rio Tinto Stadium (HIGHLIGHTS). While Whitecaps head coach Carl Robinson praised the professionalism of his side, RSL rookie Sebastian Saucedo was willing to accept the blame following his decisive red card. 5. OMAR SAVES THE DAY FOR LA When Omar Gonzalez came on as a substitute for the LA Galaxy with 15 minutes to go, probably few people though he'd end up scoring a stoppage-time winner in his side’s 2-1 win over Sporting Kansas City (HIGHLIGHTS). Yet that’s exactly what happened, leaving SKC coach Peter Vermes feeling his side deserved more from the game. 6. NEAGLE’S BACK FOR SOUNDERS It may have taken him a few games to warm up, but Lamar Neagle looked like his old self on Saturday night, as his two goals helped the Seattle Sounders on their way to a 3-1 win over the Colorado Rapids (HIGHLIGHTS), a result the Rapids attributed to bad luck and “hopeless shot selections”. 7. OBA'S GOLAZO FOR SEATTLE Obafemi Martins reputation for amazing goals continues to grow after another stunner on Saturday night. 8. RAMOS SEES RED AND CREW SC ROLL Columbus Crew SC are definitely growing in confidence following a 3-0 demolition of Orlando City (HIGHLIGHTS). The game turned when Orlando right back Rafael Ramos was sent off with his team already 1-0 down, and Lions' head coach Adrian Heath says "there's a lesson to be learned there" for the young Ramos. 9. UNITED LET LEAD SLIP AGAIN Having won two games via late goals earlier this season, D.C. United have now let victory slip away in their last two games. The latest was Saturday's 1-1 draw with the Houston Dynamo (HIGHLIGHTS), whose own performance was labelled by head coach Owen Coyle as “outstanding”. 10. STILL ROOM TO IMPROVE FOR RED BULLS To start the weekend, the New York Red Bulls continued their unbeaten start with two first-half goals against the slow-starting San Jose Earthquakes in a 2-0 win (HIGHLIGHTS). In spite of the result and the performance, Red Bulls head coach Jesse Marsch does not believe his side were at the level they’re capable of. 11. IMPACT CLOSING IN ON SELLOUT FOR CCL The first leg of the CONCACAF Champions League final is on Wednesday in Mexico City, and the Montreal Impact might take some confidence from the fact that their opponents, Club América, were thumped 4-0 by Ronaldinho’s Querétaro. Whatever result the Impact earn in Mexico on Wednesday, they’ll play the home leg in front of an impressively large crowd. 12. U-20 WORLD CUP JUST FIVE WEEKS AWAY On Friday, we learned the full list of names included in Tab Ramos’ final US Under-20 camp before the coach names his squad for the FIFA U-20 World Cup, which runs May 30-June 20 in New Zealand. Nine MLS players were called in for the camp in Austria, including Seattle's Cristian Roldan, RSL's Jordan Allen and New York's Matt Miazga. 13. DECISIONS TO MAKE IN TORONTO AND PHILLY Following their latest loss, Toronto FC GM Tim Bezbatchenko has suggested there could be player moves on the way, while Philadelphia Union coach Jim Curtin has indicated a decision regarding goalkeeper Rais Mbolhi, currently on hiatus, will be made soon. 14. USL RECAP While the Seattle Sounders 2 and the New York Red Bulls II both made signings on Friday, the Red Bulls II fought to a 1-1 draw with the Charleston Battery. The Timbers 2 lost 3-0 to Sacramento Republic, FC Montreal fell 2-1 to the Harrisburg City Islanders, the LA Galaxy II got their first win of the season and, in an all-Canadian clash, the Whitecaps II and Toronto FC II split the points in a 1-1- draw. 15. SHOULD’VE BEEN U.S. In an interview with the New York Post over the weekend, former Brazilian great Pele said the US deserves to host another World Cup. German legend Franz Beckenbauer went one further, saying the US should have had the 2022 tournament.
