Kick Off: Timbers' derby revenge | USMNT call-ups | Wood hits on HSV debut

Here are the top soccer stories everyone's talking about this morning:

Reversed Courses

After Portland broke out of their funk to grab a huge first-half lead on their way to a 4-2 triumph over visiting archrivals Seattle on Sunday, Sounders skipper Brad Evans admitted that they played right into the hands of the defending MLS Cup champs.

In case you missed it, Clint Dempsey missed the match to undergo evaluation for an irregular heartbeat. Our own Andrew Wiebe says the Sounders and USMNT will have to step up in his stead.

Presto Chango

Armchair Analyst Matt Doyle salutes Orlando City SC for quick progress made, including Sunday's 2-1 Heineken Rivalry Week win over visiting New York City FC. Nice little Sunday night for Jason Kreis and the Lions.

Back In The Game

On the heels of New York ringing up a slim win over New England on Sunday, the busy Armchair Analyst diagnosed Sacha Kljestan as the key to the Red Bulls' motor. Meanwhile, frustration is building in New England.

Boot-Kickin'

FC Dallas boss Oscar Pareja lavished some praise on Michael Barrios, whose brace led a rally victory away to Texas Derby rivals Houston.

Bargain Star

After Patrick Mullins exploded for a hat trick in D.C. United's rout of Chicago on Saturday, the Armchair Analyst wondered why it took so long for some team to unlock a value-priced star.

Keep On Roland

Philadelphia's Roland Alberg jumped off the bench to play hero in a home victory over Sporting KC on Saturday.

Reds' Blushes

Following a 1-0 "401 Derby" loss to Montreal, Toronto FC head coach Greg Vanney admitted it was embarrassing to lose to the 10-man visitors. More bad news, Giovinco will miss a month after coming off because of injury.

Home Cooked

Columbus Crew SC celebrated their first home win in three months on Saturday by blanking San Jose.

Still Stalled

The LA Galaxy had been banking on two comebacks ahead of Saturday's draw at Vancouver, but only got one. While they enjoyed Robbie Rogers' injury return, the team's finishing remained on the blink. Even more concerning, they got bit by the injury bug.

Injury Bay

It was a rough weekend for several MLS players, with LA seeing three go down with injury setbacks. Not only will Gyasi Zardes miss out on a USMNT call-up due to a knock against Vancouver, but the Galaxy also had to sub out the veteran duo of Steven Gerrard and Jelle Van Damme with first-half injuries. The Columbus-San Jose matchup produced an injury per side, with Crew SC midfielder Wil Trapp suffering another concussion  and Quakes netminder David Bingham going down with back pain.

Thumbs Up

The local Star-Tribune's editorial staff is fully on board regarding Minnesota United's jump into MLS waters.

Double Drop

Sports Illustrated scribe Grant Wahl revealed a pair of noteworthy whispers. Chicago is interested in Manchester United veteran Bastian Schweinsteiger and RB Leipzig are prepping a big bid for Borussia Dortmund youngster Christian Pulisic.

International Duty

Pulisic was one of 26 players summoned by US national team boss Jurgen Klinsmann for a pair of forthcoming CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers. The manager's large selection left the Armchair Analysts with a few questions. Were any answered by Monday morning's surprise call-up?

Against The Grain

Another Bundesliga-based US call-up was Bobby Wood, who scored a terrific goal in his first league match for Hamburg.

Trivia Time

Watch Columbus Crew SC attempt to band together to name the original 10 MLS clubs.

Kick Off: Rocky Mountain Cup kicks off Rivalry Week | Hoilett to FCD?

Here are the top soccer stories everyone's talking about this morning:

Rocky Mountain High

Heineken Rivalry Week kicks off on Friday night, when Real Salt lake welcomes Colorado to the RioT for a Rocky Mountain Cup decider (8 pm ET; UniMás in the US, MLS LIVE in Canada). That won't be the only rivalry on display, though. Old friends and competitors Tim Howard and Nick Rimando share mutual respect, but neither wants the loser tag when they meet up after the match.

Cascadia Rematch

Defending MLS Cup champs Portland expect to return a few players when they host arch nemesis Seattle on Sunday (5 pm ET; ESPN in the US, MLS LIVE in Canada). The Timbers certainly need a boost, argues Armchair Analyst Matt Doyle.

401 Derby Time

Saturday sees the 401 Derby come roaring back as Montreal head to BMO Field to take on Toronto FC (7:30 pm ET; MLS LIVE in the US, TSN in Canada). One star says Giovinco is the best player in MLS history.  Ignacio Piatti, meanwhile, will be looking to make his own mark. Learn more about the Impact's Argentine dynamo here, including how he counts his grandpa and legend Gabriel Batistuta as massive life influences.

Down Memory Lane

Before New England drop in on the Red Bulls for a nationally-televised scrap (2:30 pm ET; ESPN in the US, MLS LIVE in Canada), you can take a rear-view mirror look at 10 moments that shaped the rivalry. Oh, and check out MLS Insider's deep dive with Lee Nguyen while you're at it.

Cyle Style

New York City FC will close the weekend card with a visit to Orlando City on Sunday (7 pm ET; FS1 in the US, MLS LIVE in Canada), and coach Patrick Vieira is hoping young ace Jack Harrison can emulate the path blazed by Lions striker Cyle Larin. Jason Kreis, of course, knows a little something about both teams. He joined ExtraTime Radio on Thursday to chat about his Big Apple exit and the future of Orlando City.

Junior Associate?

While Supporters' Shield front-runners FC Dallas get ready for a road derby tilt against Houston on Saturday (9 pm ET; MLS LIVE), a report has emerged claiming that the Hoops are in talks with free agent Canada attacker Junior Hoilett.

This Is A Call

As the LA Galaxy prep to host Vancouver (Saturday, 10:30 pm ET; TSN in Canada, MLS LIVE in the US), Steven Gerrard has advised young English players to come check out MLS.

Muscling Up

With Columbus Crew SC set to host San Jose on Saturday (7:30 pm ET; MLS LIVE), a local scribe discusses how an overlooked summer pickup has given the club some needed sizein attack.

Setting the Table

Rounding out the weekend slate are a pair of important Saturday bouts. Chicago visit D.C. United (7 pm ET; MLS LIVE) and the Philadelphia Union welcoming Sporting KC (7 pm ET; MLS LIVE). With all 20 teams still alive in the playoff race, there's plenty at stake.

Vacancy For One

Our Sam Stejskal provides an update on the head coach hunt down at Atlanta United. Plus, how much allocation money did Real Salt Lake snag when Carlos Salcedo left Chivas for Serie A?

In International Waters

Armchair Analyst Matt Doyle takes a stab at predicting the roster soon to be called up by US boss Jurgen Klinsmann for the next set of CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers. Meanwhile, Canada have called in six MLS players for their upcoming qualifying matches.

Toon Time

With DeAndre Yedlin set for a new career path at Newcastle, we take a look at how he'll fit in at St. James Park.

Rough Crowd

Fabian Johnson and Borussia Moenchengladbach were handed a harrowing draw for the group phase of the UEFA Champions League.

Portlandish

The Portland Timbers have teamed up with a fashion label to release some new swag. Dope.
