Kick Off: Historic first wins for New York City FC, Orlando City on goal-filled Week 2

Here are the top 15 stories everyone's talking about this morning:

1. VILLA LEADS NYCFC TO VICTORY

With a crowd of 43,507 turning up to watch their home opener at Yankee Stadium, a fantastic performance from David Villa saw New York City FC secure their first MLS victory, beating the New England Revolution 2-0 (HIGHLIGHTS). Despite creating chance after chance in the first half, the Revs failed to get on the scoresheet, something that's already becoming an all too familiar theme.

2. ALL SQUARE IN THE ROSE CITY

Fanendo Adi went a long way toward silencing his critics on Sunday, twice giving the Portland Timbers the lead before they settled for a wild 2-2 draw with the LA Galaxy (HIGHLIGHTS). Although the Timbers are looking on the bright side despite conceding a stoppage-time equalizer, the game presented troubling trends for both teams, particularly the Galaxy.

3. BELIEVE IN BRAD

In perhaps the biggest upset of the weekend, the San Jose Earthquakes overcame a goal conceded within the first 20 seconds of their match to earn a confidence-boosting 3-2 road victory over the Seattle Sounders (HIGHLIGHTS). Brad Evans did not have a good night, looking uncomfortable in his new role at center back for the Sounders. But his team remain fully confident in their captain's abilities.

4. SIX-GOAL STANDOFF IN SANDY

If Jeff Cassar was happy with Real Salt Lake's back line following Week 1, that might not be the case for long after seeing them ship three (admittedly strange) goals at home against the Philadelphia Union. Still, they fought their way back to earn a 3-3 draw (HIGHLIGHTS). Although Fernando Aristeguieta lived up to Jim Curtin's goalscoring promise, the Union head coach was dismayed to see the Venezuelan's hard work  undone by a controversial late penalty call.

5. ORLANDO SECURE FIRST WIN

Friday night was a historic one for Orlando City, as they celebrated their first victory in MLS, beating the Houston Dynamo 1-0 at BBVA Compass stadium (HIGHLIGHTS). Unfortunately, after being the star of Houston's show through the first game-and-a-half of the season, goalkeeper Tyler Deric's mistake led to the game's only goal. After the game, Dynamo head coach Owen Coyle was predictably candid about the result.

6. THE AGE OF PÉREZ

Blas Pérez certainly didn't act like a man who'd just turned 34, as his two goals helped lead an otherwise youthful FC Dallas side to a 3-1 win over Sporting Kansas City (HIGHLIGHTS). Despite conceding three goals, Kansas City head coach Peter Vermes praised his defense, instead pointing to an officiating decision as one of the main reasons for their loss.

7. SEEING RED

Things looked finely balanced between Columbus Crew SC and Toronto FC until a controversial red card to Justin Morrow, one Greg Vanney strongly disagreed with, set Crew SC on their way to a 2-0 win (HIGHLIGHTS). Columbus still had to score, though, and while Kei Kamara's goal led to this great celebration, Justin Meram showed why he was back in the starting lineup.

8. COLUMBUS CONTRACT

Prior to their game against Toronto, Columbus Crew SC announced they had picked up the option on a one-year extension to head coach Gregg Berhalter's contract. However, there was also news that will force the club to shuffle its lineup, as Waylon Francis revealed he's once again been called up by Costa Rica.

9. CHICAGO A WORK IN PROGRESS

With the Chicago Fire falling to their second straight defeat, this time losing 1-0 at home to the Vancouver Whitecaps (HIGHLIGHTS), head coach Frank Yallop acknowledges his side is still a work in progress. While a Lovel Palmer mistake handed the Whitecaps their goal, Octavio Rivero still had to finish it, and the Uruguayan showed just why the 'Caps brought him to Vancouver.

10. US U-17s MOVE ON, CANADA FALTER

They may have done it the hard way, but the US U-17 national team got the job done on Sunday, beating Jamaica 5-4 on penalties to qualify for the FIFA U-17 World Cup (HIGHLIGHTS). Unfortunately, the same couldn't be said for Canada, as their U-17s fell 3-0 to Costa Rica (HIGHLIGHTS) in a game that included the most calamitous own goal you'll likely see.

11. SIGNINGS AND RUMORS

On Friday, the Galaxy added Ignacio Maganto to their roster, signing the Spanish midfielder they selected in the first round of this year's SuperDraft. The 23-year-old is eager to make a mark with his new team. Yet with a number of high-profile players once again linked with MLS moves, could a much bigger name be set to join a team in the Eastern Conference?

12. ANOTHER BIG CROWD AT THE BIG O

The Montreal Impact didn't play a game this weekend as they get set for Wednesday's first leg of their CONCACAF Champions League semifinal against Alajuelense, and it seems ticket sales are progressing well for the Canadian side. The Impact will also benefit from another bye week ahead of the second leg, thanks to the New York Red Bulls.

13. CUBO TO THE RESCUE

Having not gotten much playing time during his loan stint with Chivas de Guadalajara, Erick Torres had vowed to make the most of each minute he played, which is exactly what he did on Saturday, scoring twice to help the Liga MX side to a crucial 2-1 comeback victory in their fight against relegation.

14. TAKING NOTHING FOR GRANTED

While it may seem as though Mexico got a kind draw for this summer's Gold Cup, being placed in a group with Cuba, Guatemala and Trinidad & Tobago, Mexico manager Miguel Herrera is warning his side not to take anything for granted.

15. CLEANING UP CONCACAF

With Jeffrey Webb running unopposed for another term as CONCACAF president, some are touting him as a future candidate for the FIFA presidency. Yet Webb himself is quick to tell people that there's still a lot of work to do in CONCACAF first.
