Kick Off: Sounders bolster defense, Roger Espinoza poised for MLS return and Montreal eye DP targets

Here are the top 15 stories everyone's talking about today:

1. SOUNDERS SIGNING

The Seattle Sounders have made their first signing of the offseason, picking up veteran English defender Tyrone Mears. The 31-year-old impressed in training with the Sounders in the summer and should help fill in the gaps following the departures of DeAndre Yedlin, Jalil Anibaba and Djimi Traore.

2. NO DEAL DONE FOR SALCEDO

Despite recent reports, Real Salt Lake's technical director Craig Waibel has insisted that no deal sending Carlos Salcedo to Chivas Guadalajara is close to being finalized. Waibel also made it clear that Salcedo is available should someone meet RSL's asking price, but added the club is not actively looking to sell the 21-year-old.

3. IMPACT TARGETS?

With reports that the Montreal Impact are looking to add two Designated Players this week,Alberto Gilardino and Juan Roman Riquelme emerged as favorites to join the club. Yet it seems that while Gilardino could well be on his way, there's apparently no truth to the Riquelme rumors.

4. ESPINOZA SET FOR RETURN?

Looks like Roger Espinoza could be on his way back to the US, with the Wigan Evening Post suggesting that the Honduran's current club, Wigan Athletic, have given the midfielder permission to leave the club. Sporting KC hold his rights and head coach Peter Vermes has made it clear the former Sporting Park star is welcome back in his old stomping grounds.

5. EDDIE AND THE EARTHQUAKES?

Could the San Jose Earthquakes be close to signing a new striker? They might be according to Honduran forward Eddie Hernandez, who has declared he's received an offer from the MLS side along with various other clubs abroad.

6. CITIZEN Z

There was potentially big news for the US national team on Monday as highly-rated 17-year-old Arsenal starlet Gedion Zelalem reportedly secured his US citizenship. That opens the door, pending FIFA approval, for Zelalem to represent the US, something the Arsenal youngster is reportedly keen to do.

7. DISKERUD DEFINITELY ON THE MOVE

Mix Diskerud might need to decrypt his poems and make a decision now, as it was revealed on Monday that the US international will not be returning to Norwegian side Rosenberg in 2015. With the player's contract set to expire on Wednesday, the club revealed that attempts to secure a new deal had failed, leaving the midfielder to pursue other options.

8. EXTENDED STAY FOR ONYEWU

One American abroad whose immediate future is settled though is Oguchi Onyewu, as the defender had his contract with English Championship side Charlton Athletic extended until the end of the English season.

9. AVAILABLE OPTIONS

It also seems that a couple of other players are looking to either move or return stateside, with former US youth keeper Quentin Westberg, currently without a club, calling MLS a viable option. Dutch midfielder Demy De Zeeuw has offered his services to MLS, amongst others, via LinkedIn.

10. PLENTY OF ROOM IN ATLANTA

When Atlanta's MLS franchise begins play in 2017, they'll be entering an already crowded sports market. But don't worry because club president Darren Eales is confident the new club will be able to carve out its own slice of the action.

11. RONALDINHO TO ORLANDO?!

For now we're just going to chalk this one up to it being silly season, but with former Brazilian superstar Ronaldinho seemingly on the outs with Mexican side Queretaro, could the two-time FIFA World Player of the Year find a new home with Orlando City?

12. HOWARD SET FOR THE SIDELINES

Tim Howard's currently on hiatus from the US national team, but it looks like the goalkeeper is set for a short break from the domestic game as well following news that the calf injury he picked up on Boxing Day will keep him out of action for 4-6 weeks.

13. PLAYING HOME GAMES AWAY

World Cup qualifying will begin for some nations in 2015 and as Guatemala attempt to reach the final phase of qualifying, concerns over their infrastructure has the Guatemalan Soccer Federation considering the possibility of playing their "home" games in the United States.

14. TOP PICKS?

We all know Robbie Earle as a soccer pundit for NBC, but the former Jamaican international could soon also be known as the father as one of the MLS SuperDraft's hottest prospects. Staying with the SuperDraft, reports have emerged that forward Romario Williams has been signed as the first member of the 2015 Generation adidas class.

15. THE MLS SUPERFANS

As MLS supporter culture continues to grow and grow in the US, meet the fans who take it to the next level.
