Kick Off: New England Revolution traveling supporters to Red Bull Arena | Houston coaching search winds down
Here are the top 15 stories everyone's talking about today:
1. SUPPORTING THE SUPPORTERS
Over 20,000 Revolution fans made the journey to Gillette Stadium for Sunday’s Eastern Conference Semifinal 2nd leg, and if the club's vision comes to fruition, that crowd could one day become a regular occurrence in a new urban stadium. In the meantime, the Revs are focused on taking a strong crowd with them to New York, and that means free buses.
2. HOUSTON’S HUNT
The Houston Dynamo stated they would cast a wide net for their coaching search, but it seemsthe club has already narrowed down the candidates to a group of nine finalists, with Wade Barrett and Steve Ralston confirmed as names on that list.
3. VETERANS GUIDE THE FUTURE
As Jurgen Klinsmann continues to look to the future for the US national team, his latest roster features plenty of veterans to help mentor the younger players. What it doesn’t feature is Clint Dempsey, but it seems there’s a reason for that.
4. NEXT GENERATION TALENT
US Soccer is looking past the current crop of young players and the federation is focused onfinding and developing players in regions that might otherwise be overlooked. One group of youngsters did get some recognition when TopDrawerSoccer.com named an MLS Under-23 squad based on 2014, and the starting lineup featured seven American players.
5. NGUYEN’S ROAD LESS TRAVELLED
It’s been seven years since Lee Nguyen last made an appearance for the US national team and, while the New England Revolution midfielder has finally earned another call-up, he’s been on quite the journey to get here.
6. US SET FOR ANOTHER GERMAN REMATCH?
While the US national team have the Gold Cup to plan for next summer, could they also be in line for a high-profile game against Germany in Berlin? Oliver Bierhoff, general manager of the German national team, certainly seems to think so.
7. RED RESCINDED
The Ethan Finlay red card from the Revs-Crew match on Sunday generated plenty of debate. Not so much for MLS' Independent Review Panel, which rescinded the Columbus Crew midfielder’s punishment. Meanwhile, a less-than-pleased Mike Petke is planning an appeal of his own over Roy Miller’s red-card suspension.
8. TURF TALK
Thierry Henry has never played on the surface at Gillette Stadium, but with the second leg of the Eastern Conference Championship taking place in the venue, will the Frenchman finally make his debut? For now, the New York Red Bulls are not saying anything.
9. PAREJA PLEASED WITH PROGRESS
While FC Dallas’ season may have come to an end, head coach Oscar Pareja was happy with the side’s overall performance in his first year in charge and feels there’s plenty to look forward to in the future thanks to the youthful nature of his team.
10. A NEW-LOOK MONTREAL?
The Montreal Impact’s starting lineup could look incredibly different come the start of the 2015 season, as the club look to once again make a run at the MLS Cup Playoffs. What do the Impact need to help them there?
11. VELA TO START
Mexico play the Netherlands today (2:30 pm ET, ESPN2) and, as usual, Miguel Herrera has already announced his starting lineup, which will see Carlos Vela make his first start since 2011.
12. CARIBBEAN CUP COMMENCES
Some MLS players have already kicked off their international participation, with the San Jose Earthquakes' Cordell Cato going the full 90 as Trinidad & Tobago opened their Caribbean Cup campaign with a 3-2 win over Curacao. The tournament champion will qualify directly for the 2016 Copa América Centenario, while the top four teams will qualify for the 2015 Gold Cup.
13. ENGLISH GK TO OCSC?
The next several weeks will be critical for 2015 MLS expansion side Orlando City as they begin to populate their player roster and it seems they might be looking to England for help at the goalkeeper position. Elsewhere, the Atlanta expansion side, which debuts in 2017, is set to watch its new team president get to work on Monday.
14. OPEN YOUR WORLD
MLS added a new partner for the 2015 season with Heineken becoming the official beer of the league. But the company is also expanding its relationship with the North American top-flight to encompass new deals with seven different MLS clubs.
15. BIG DECISION AHEAD
FC Dallas rookie Tesho Akindele, who has already left a mark in his first season in the league, recently declined a call-up from Canada, the country of his birth. But he also has US citizenship and may decide to represent the USMNT.  Should he opt for the latter, here's an argument why Canadian fans shouldn't be broken up about it.
