Kick Off: USMNT vs. Czech Rep | Vanney era in TFC | Jones home Revs debut
Here are the top 15 stories everyone's talking about this morning, and don't forget to vote for your Etihad Airways MLS Player of the Month:
1. NEW ERA STARTS NOW FOR TFC
The Greg Vanney era of Toronto FC gets under way tonight when the new coach takes his team to face the Philadelphia Union (7 pm ET, MLS LIVE in the US, TSN2 & RDS2 in Canada), and it seems TFC are moving forward in other ways as well. Both teams are very much in the playoff hunt, and Union coach Jim Curtin believes his side can grab a win despite a number of international absentees.
2. JONES TO MAKE HOME DEBUT?
Jermaine Jones could make his home debut tonight when the New England Revolution host Sporting Kansas City (7:30 pm ET, MLS LIVE), and if Jones' stats from the game against Toronto are any indication, then the Revs may well extend their current unbeaten streak. An ailing Kansas City will be calling on Aurélien Collin to help prevent that, but could this be the defender's final year with the club?
3. WHATS NEXT FOR CHIVAS USA?
It's a case of top vs bottom in the Western Conference when Chivas USA host the Seattle Sounders (10:30 pm ET, MLS LIVE), with the Goats having lost the last six head-to-head encounters. Seattle currently ranks just below the red-hot LA Galaxy in the latest MLS Power Rankings, while Chivas USA fans will hope for better things in the future with their rebranded club. But what do we currently know about that?
4. THE FUTURE IS NOW
The US national team take on the Czech Republic Wednesday in Prague (2:15 pm ET, NBCSN) as the US look to begin the new cycle with a win. Jozy Altidore will serve as captain, and the game offers Jurgen Klinsmann his first real chance to assess some potential future stars.
5. CAMPUS CALLING
Jordan Morris could well make his senior US national team debut this evening, and having already become the first collegiate soccer player to make a US squad since 1999, here's everything you need to know about the kid with a bright future.
6. RESPECT THE CALENDAR
It's certainly a young US squad, with teenager Emerson Hyndman another of the players looking to make his mark. Yet with Jurgen Klinsmann missing almost all of his heavy hitters, that's not something the German is particularly happy about. In fact, Klinsmann believes MLS needs to start taking time off for FIFA dates.
7. WHO'S NO. 1?
While Klinsmann has confirmed that Brad Guzan and Nick Rimando will each play a half in Wednesday's friendly (sorry, Cody Cropper), a MLS, a possible future US No.1, Sean Johnson, continues to develop.
8. DONOVAN SWANSONG
The US' next game will of course be Landon Donovan's final appearance for the national team. Will that be awkward for Klinsmann, considering that he left the USMNT and MLS all-time leading scorer out of the World Cup? Not according to the coach, who says, "As a player, obviously he deserves every piece of recognition for an amazing career."
9. CLIMB OUT THE WINDOW
While Julian Green and Jurgen Klinsmann are both excited about the player's loan move to Hamburg, was the summer transfer window perhaps unkind to American players? In the case of Brek Shea, Klinsmann certainly thinks so, and it seems the midfielder isn't too happy about it either.
10. RED BULLS STILL ON TRACK?
Following their defeat to D.C. United on Sunday, the New York Red Bulls found themselves outside the playoff places, but Mike Petke is still fully confident they'll climb back in, and his optimism is buoyed by the news that, despite having to leave Sunday's game early, Chris Duvall isn't actually injured.
11. SEASON OVER FOR HOUSTON 'KEEPER
The Houston Dynamo may have gotten a big win on Friday against Sporting Kansas City, but it seems to have come at a cost, with Tally Hall set to miss the rest of the season after rupturing his ACL. The goalkeeper will undergo surgery on Friday.
12. IF YOU BUILD IT, WILL THEY COME?
While Sacramento's mayor was revealing that MLS executives will soon be visiting the city to assess its expansion chances, the San Antonio Scorpions took matters into their own hands, announcing plans for a 10,000-seat expansion to their current stadium as they also look to land an MLS club.
13. PLAYING TO WIN
D.C United are still working to secure a new stadium, and with attendance on the rise, can the fact the club is enjoying a good season on the pitch actually help their cause away from it? According to sidelined star Chris Pontius: "It certainly can't hurt."
14. RSL IN USL TAKES ANOTHER STEP FORWARD
Real Salt Lake got some good news concerning their future USL PRO team following initial approval for a minor league stadium at the Utah state fairground. The next step is unanimous approval from the board of directors of Sept. 10.
15. MLS JUST IN THE NICK OF TIME
Want to get your kids into MLS? Good news. The league is part of a new 'Nick Sports' show on Nickelodeon's Nick Toons channel. The show begins today.
