Kick Off: New York Red Bulls, Vancouver Whitecaps move into playoff spots, LA Galaxy miss big chance
Here are the top 15 stories everyone's talking about this morning:
1. SEEING RED
The New York Red Bulls left it very late but managed to secure a 1-0 win over 10-man D.C. United (watch highlights here). The game was undoubtedly changed when D.C. forward Fabián Espíndola was sent off in the 32nd minute by World Cup referee Mark Geiger, and Ben Olsen is adamant it wasn’t a red card.
2. WINNING FANS
The attendance at Red Bull Arena was 14,953, respectable for a game at 8pm on a school night, and with the New York Red Bulls entering the final months of being MLS’ only team in the New York area, the club are looking for a playoff run to help gain as many fans as they can.
3. WHITECAPS BREAK THEIR STREAK
While Carl Robinson was disappointed his side couldn’t score from open play, the Vancouver Whitecaps did manage to secure a 2-0 win over the San Jose Earthquakes (watch highlights here) and move back into the playoff spots. The Earthquakes are now on a seven-game winless streak as their troubling slide continues.
4. TRYING SOMETHING NEW
The LA Galaxy tried something new in their 2-2 draw away to the Montreal Impact (watch highlights here), but after going two goals down, Bruce Arena accepts he "didn’t have the personnel” to make a three-man backline work. While the Impact eventually surrendered that lead, Montreal were still able to honor one of their grieving players.
5. BECKHAM’LL BUILD IT
Despite a number of recent setbacks, David Beckham is still confident he can bring an MLS club to Miami. The former LA Galaxy star noted that, “There are speed bumps along the way, and we’ve come up against them,” but insisted that, “Miami will happen.”
6. PHILLY'S SEARCH CONTINUES
Rene Meulensteen’s name continues to be linked with the Philadelphia Union head coach’s job, and while the club's CEO confirmed Meulensteen is indeed a candidate for the job, no decision has been made as of yet. Interim manager Jim Curtin, whose own coaching career seems to have been shaped in college, will lead the Union into next week's Open Cup championship.
7. GADDIS GETS HIS REWARD
Ray Gaddis has very quietly become one of the Philadelphia Union’s top performers, but it hasn’t gone unnoticed by his current club, who have rewarded his vast improvement this season with a new contract.
8. ABSOLUTE REAL ROYALTY
With Real Salt Lake hoping to build a minor league stadium in the Utah State Fair Park, team owner Dell Loy Hansen made his pitch to the venue's board on Wednesday, during which time the proposed team’s name was revealed..
9. WHO’S NEXT FOR ORLANDO CITY?
Speaking of 2015, while Orlando City are still focused on their final USL PRO campaign, the club have also been busy preparing for their first MLS season. To that end, with seven players signed to MLS contracts for next year, who will soon be joining them? Surely club captain Rob Valentino has earned his shot.
10. MORE KIDS FOR THE CREW?
Last week there was a Manchester City youngster, and now there’s another new face kicking about Columbus Crew training, with Mexican-American forward Eder Guerrero currently practicing with the squad.
11. THE DYNAMO'S NEW PLAN
While Corey Ashe may have seemed to be a lineup casualty following the arrival of DaMarcus Beasley at the Houston Dynamo, could the newest DP’s signing actually help the Dynamo’s other left back down the line?
12. A STRONG DEBUT
Erick Torres didn’t score on his Mexico debut, but all the same, Miguel Herrera was more than pleased with the effort Torres put in. With Torres’ attention now turning back to Chivas USA, it seems he too was happy with his debut.
13. COPA CENTROAMERICANA
The final of the Copa Centroamericana is set, with Guatemala earning a place in Saturday’s final against Costa Rica. Panama will face El Salvador in the third place playoff, and while Costa Rica were already qualified, all four of those teams have now secured their place in next summer’s Gold Cup.
14. ALL CHANGE AT STOKE
Geoff Cameron looks set to miss another two weeks of action for English Premier League side Stoke City after the US international underwent a successful surgery for his hernia. With club teammate Brek Shea set to go out on loan to Championship side Birmingham City, what might the extended absence mean for Cameron’s future?
15. SEATTLE: A BRIEF HISTORY
The Seattle Sounders crowds are the envy of many an MLS team, and the standard many new teams hope to copy. However, they did not just appear overnight, and with the Sounders themselves celebrating their 40th anniversary, Seattle has a long history with the beautiful game.
