1. DOS SANTOS JOINS THE GALAXY, BUT PICKS UP AN INJURY
Giovani Dos Santos has officially joined the LA Galaxy. The Mexican international was announced as the club’s newest Designated Player on Wednesday, with the Galaxy using Targeted Allocation Money to buy Omar Gonzalez down from DP status. But has their latest addition already picked up an injury?
2. CREW SC WIN ON THE ROAD
Frank Yallop was left despondent after seeing his Chicago Fire team lose 1-0 to Columbus Crew SC on Wednesday (HIGHLIGHTS), telling reporters after that his team were completely outplayed. Columbus were pleased with their strong performance, especially considering it resulted in their first road win of the season.
3. TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO EMERGE ON TOP
Trinidad and Tobago believed they could go toe-to-toe with anyone in the Gold Cup and they sure proved that on Wednesday, scoring at the death to earn a wild 4-4 draw with Mexico to win Group C. The result kept Mexico in second in the group, setting up a quarterfinal clash with Costa Rica on Sunday (7:30 pm ET, Fox Sports 1/Univision/UDN in the US, SN One in Canada). After the match, fiery manager Miguel Herrera offered no excuses for his team’s poor defensive play.
4. GOLD CUP DOWN TO EIGHT
Now that the Group stage games are all finished, the bracket is set for the knockout rounds of the Gold Cup. The US national team will take on Cuba in Baltimore on Saturday (5 pm ET, FOX/Univision/UDN in the US, SN World in Canada) after Cuba beat Guatemala 1-0 on Wednesday to finish third in Group C. It wasn't all good news for Cuba on Wednesday however, as two more players may have defected from the team.
5. HERNANDEZ NOT LOOKING LIKELY
While Giovani Dos Santos is officially in, the latest reports suggest that fellow Mexican international, Javier Hernandez, is unlikely to join MLS this summer, with the surplus Manchester United striker’s wage demands apparently too high for any interested party.
6. SOUMARE WANTS AWAY
Despite playing 16 of the Montreal Impact’s 24 games this season, Bakary Soumare is apparently unhappy with the amount of game time he’s getting. He's asked the club for a trade and the Impact won't stand in his way, with club technical director Adam Braz saying his phone is "open 24/7" for offers. While Soumare wants out, it sounds like one Italian international might want in at Stade Saputo.
7. QUAKES SIGN A BRAZILIAN
The San Jose Earthquakes have made a new signing, bringing in Brazilian youngster Matheus Silva to help improve their squad. Meanwhile, following some strange scenes in the International Champions Cup, the Quakes mascot may be looking for a new career in wrestling?
8. WHITECAPS WITHOUT WASTON
It might be come as a bit of a blow to the Vancouver Whitecaps, but Kendall Waston earned some well deserved international recognition on Wednesday, getting called up by Costa Rica for the Gold Cup knockout rounds. He'll be in uniform for the Ticos quarterfinal date with Mexico on Sunday at MetLife Stadium.
9. DYNAMO DOING THINGS DIFFERENTLY
The Houston Dynamo have found a new USL affiliate for next year after partnering with Lone Star FC to help form a new franchise, Rio Grande Valley FC that will begin play in 2016. Lone Star will be in charge of running the franchise while the Dynamo will be in charge of the technical staff and player selection. Getting back to the first-team, is Houston boss Owen Coyle looking to bring in a fellow Scotsman?
10. FC DALLAS CLOSE TO NEW SIGNING
As the Houston Dynamo announced their new USL affiliation, fellow Texan side FC Dallas remain uncertain as to what their future plans with the third division will involve. One area the club does appear to be certain on, according to technical director Fernando Clavijo? They’ll soon be making a new signing.
11. TIMBERS NEARING AN ANNOUNCEMENT
Rumors have continued to swirl over the past week that the Portland Timbers are looking to sign Argentine striker Lucas Melano and, while head coach Caleb Porter wouldn’t confirm or deny those reports, he did suggest that the club could soon have a player announcement to make.
12. RED BULLS TAKE A SECOND LOOK
As the New York Red Bulls look for more reinforcements, the club has brought back two unsigned SuperDraft selections on trial. Meanwhile, with one eye on the future, are the Red Bulls setting the standard in youth development and outreach?
13. BENDIK BACK IN GOAL
Joe Bendik will finally get back between the posts for Toronto FC this Saturday after the MLS Disciplinary Committee handed Chris Konopka a one-game ban for endangering the safety of an opponent in TFC's draw at New York City FC. The Committee also fined the Red Bulls' Lloyd Sam and the Whitecaps' Kendall Waston for embellishment.
14. TRANSFERING SUCCESS
Things are going considerably better for Real Salt Lake in the US Open Cup than they are in MLS right now. Following Tuesday's quarterfinal victory over the LA Galaxy, RSL are hoping they can take their form from the Cup and translate it to the league.
15. THE BEST IN THE BUSINESS?
Are Bruce Arena and Bob Bradley amongst the top 50 managers in the world? They are according to this latest list from FourFour Two magazine, with Arena coming in at 46 and Bradley ranking all the way up at 24.
