1. DEMPSEY'S THE HERO
With the score tied at 1-1 in stoppage time, Clint Dempsey stepped up to play the hero for the Seattle Sounders and help secure a 2-1 victory against the New York Red Bulls (HIGHLIGHTS) on Sunday night. Having contained the Sounders for much of the game, Red Bulls head coach Jesse Marsch described the defeat as “gut-wrenching.”
2. INJURIES ADDING UP FOR LA
At the end of a rain-soaked game, the LA Galaxy were happy to escape Foxborough with a 2-2 draw against the New England Revolution (HIGHLIGHTS) on Sunday, but the point came at a cost: Three players left the game with injuries. New England also suffered an injury blow, as Jermaine Jones will miss upcoming US national team matches with a groin injury. Diego Fagundez scored the final, game-tying goal for the Revs, and the young Uruguayan has been urged to fight for more starts.
3. JEWSBURY’S LATE HEROICS
Will Johnson’s return may have pushed Jack Jewsbury back to the bench on Saturday, but the Portland Timbers veteran came on to help secure a memorable 2-1 victory vs. the Colorado Rapids (HIGHLIGHTS) deep into stoppage time. Yet while the loss came late, the Rapids lamented another slow start.
4. LIONS CAN’T CAPITALIZE
With Columbus Crew SC reduced to 10 men in just the 16th minute of their 2-2 draw with Orlando City (HIGHLIGHTS), the Lions feel they should've come away with more from the game. However, if not for a late Pedro Ribeiro goal, Columbus would have taken all three points, with the visiting team suggesting Michael Parkhurst’s red card spoiled their plans.
5. LIONS GO BIG ON THEIR NEW HOME
Orlando City’s late fightback to earn another point capped what had already been a pretty great weekend for the Lions after club officials and Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer held a Friday press conference to announce that the team’s new stadium will not only be entirely privately financed, but that it will also seat 25-28,000 fans.
6. GOAL OF HIS CENTURY
Gershon Koffie marked his 100th MLS start for the Vancouver Whitecaps in style, scoring a fantastic long-range drive to help put his side on their way to a 2-1 victory over Real Salt Lake (HIGHLIGHTS). For Real Salt Lake, though, the defeat came down to a late lapse in concentration.
7. NYCFC KEEPING THE FAITH
Neither team was particularly happy following a 1-1 draw between the Houston Dynamo and New York City FC on Saturday (HIGHLIGHTS), as the Dynamo felt they deserved a lot more from a game they controlled for large portions. Meanwhile, the draw extended NYCFC’s winless streak to 11 games and, while the team has vowed to keep the faith in their system, it seems they are still considering out-of-contract center back Oguchi Onyewu.
8. UNITED PLAYERS STEP IT UP
For the second time in two weeks, D.C. United found themselves down a goal against the Philadelphia Union. That was until Taylor Kemp and Chris Korb stepped up their game to help deliver a 2-1 victory (HIGHLIGHTS) on Saturday night. The Union were left frustrated by a disputed penalty kick and the fact that the eventual goalscorer was still on the field.
9. YOU AIN'T SEEN NOTHING YET
Despite playing with 10 men for more than half the game, Montreal Impact head coach Frank Klopas would not blame ejected midfielder Marco Donadel for his side’s 3-0 loss to the Chicago Fire (HIGHLIGHTS) on Saturday, instead pointing to the whole team's performance. The Fire’s Kennedy Igboananike terrorized the Impact defense for most of the game, but promised his best is still to come. Meanwhile, it looks as though the Fire are set to lose their other star DP for a couple of games.
10. GIOVINCO DOES IT AGAIN
Despite a short delay to kick off, Toronto FC were able to secure their second straight home victory, this time a 3-1 win over the San Jose Earthquakes (HIGHLIGHTS), on the back of another star performance from Sebastian Giovinco. With the Quakes' only goal again coming from the penalty spot, they were left to rue their inability to create chances.
11. THANKS, DE RO
Dwayne De Rosario may have referred to his retirement on Instagram a couple of weeks ago, but on Saturday the former Canadian international officially confirmed it, stating how pleased he was to finish his career with hometown team Toronto FC. However, the former MLS and MLS Cup MVP found himself upstaged at his own press conference.
12. ZUSI RETURNS IN STYLE
Graham Zusi marked his return to Sporting Kansas City’s starting lineup with an “exceptional match,” as he helped his side secure a 4-0 victory over FC Dallas last Friday (HIGHLIGHTS). The result left Dallas head coach Oscar Pareja bemoaning a lack of maturity among his players.
13. YANKS ABROAD
Following their opening loss against France, the US U-23s bounced back against the Netherlands on Friday to secure a 3-1 victory in the Toulon Tournament, only to be brought back to earth by a 2-1 loss against CONCACAF rivals Costa Rica on Sunday. The senior national team will also be heading to Europe this week, and on Sunday, Jurgen Klinsmann named his latest 22-man roster.
14. CAN U-20s KEEP ROLLING?
Things are going better for the US U-20s, who beat Myanmar 2-1 early Saturday morning in their opening game of the FIFA U-20 World Cup. Next up for Tab Ramos’ side is tournament hosts New Zealand and, while the game is expected to be played in front of a sell-out crowd of more than 25,000, Tommy Thompson is not the least bit fazed.
15. FIVE MLS SIDES READY FOR CCL DRAW
It's only been a couple of weeks since Club America were crowned CONCACAF champions, but the next edition of the CONCACAF Champions League is already taking shape with the draw happening on Monday. Five MLS teams get set to learn who they’ll be facing in this year’s group stage.
