1. WILD SEA-POR MATCH HEADLINES US OPEN CUP ON TUESDAY
The first batch of games in the US Open Cup 4th Round finished without a single upset, as MLS sides topped their NASL and USL opponents in all nine matches. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the game everyone is discussing today is the all-MLS encounter between the Seattle Sounders and the Portland Timbers, which the Timbers won 3-1 in extratime after the Sounders were reduced to seven men due to an injury and three red cards.
2. RECORD CROWD SEES MYERS RETURN
Sporting Kansas City’s 1-0 win over St. Louis FC may not seem remarkable on the surface, but the game was notable for two reasons. Not only did Chance Myers make his long-awaited return from injury, but he did it in front of a record US Open Cup crowd.
3. US OPEN CUP CONTINUES
Wednesday sees the remaining seven USOC 4th Round games, including the much-anticipated clash between New York City FC and the New York Cosmos, a Texas derby between the Austin Aztex and the Houston Dynamo, and the LA Galaxy taking on PSA Elite, the lowest ranked team still in the tournament. Check out the kickoff times and live streams.
4. CANADA ADVANCE
Canada finished off Dominica in the second leg of their World Cup qualifying series, getting goals from Cyle Larin, Tesho Akindele and Tosaint Ricketts in a 4-0 win in Toronto. Akindele’s goal came in just his second appearance for the Canucks, and the FC Dallas forward described the whole experience as “a perfect day for me.”
5. USWNT TOP THE GROUP
The US women’s national team beat Nigeria 1-0 on Tuesday to finish top of their group and advance to the Round of 16 at the Women's World Cup. The performance was a definite improvement on the one they put in against Sweden. They will now face a third-place finisher to be determined in their first knockout game.
6. NYCFC SIGNINGS
While New York City FC prepare for their USOC debut (7.30 pm ET, YouTube, ONE World Sports), the club signed two defensive reinforcements on Tuesday, bringing in Jose Angel Tashende on loan from Manchester City until the end of the season and acquiring Andoni Iraola from Athletic Bilbao. Both players will be eligible to play once the secondary transfer window opens on July 8.
7. REVOLUTION PART WITH BENGTSON
The New England Revolution are back in Boston on Wednesday for their US Open Cup game against the Charlotte Independence. The Revs are not exactly short on attacking options right now, so it was perhaps unsurprising to learn that they have agreed to mutually part ways with Honduran Jerry Bengtson.
8. RIVERHOUNDS ARE READY FOR UNITED
The draw of D.C. United in the US Open Cup has the Pittsburgh Riverhounds looking at a potential record crowd at Highmark Stadium tonight and that, combined with the visitors looking like genuine MLS Cup contenders, is all the motivation the Riverhounds need.
9. SLOW ROAD TO RECOVERY FOR LA
While the LA Galaxy provided updates on Robbie Keane’s availability for tonight’s US Open Cup game against PSA Elite, as well as narrowing down when Steven Gerrard might join up with his new team, there is currently no timeframe for when Bradford Jameson IV will return after suffering a concussion during the FIFA U-20 World Cup.
10. EXPRESSION OF INTEREST
Didier Drogba has sggested he could join an MLS club this summer, but it seems he isn’t the only player open to offers from MLS sides.
11. CONCACAF SIDES BOW OUT OF WORLD CUP QUALIFYING
The World Cup may still be three years away, but Canada’s victory on Tuesday spelled the end of the road for Dominica, as did defeats or draws for Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and a number of other CONCACAF nations.
12. A GIANT VICTORY FOR A TINY NATION
It was a good day in World Cup qualifying for one other MLS player, as A.J DeLaGarza played his part in Guam’s 2-1 win over India, with one of the goals coming from former D.C. United and San Jose Earthquake defender Brandon McDonald.
13. JAMAICA DROP ANOTHER TIGHT ONE
Two of CONCACAF's stronger representatives, meanwhile, are competing at the 2015 Copa América. While Mexico have tied each of their first two games and stand a chance of advancing, Jamaica are in a tough spot after losing 1-0 to Paraguay on Tuesday, their second 1-0 defeat of the tournament. The Reggae Boyz now need to win their final group game against Argentina on Saturday to stay alive in the tournament.
14. HELPING HEATH HELP OTHERS
Adrian Heath was fined over his recent comments about Dom Dwyer, which the striker himself addressed last night, and Orlando City fans decided to help him pay his fine. They’ve already raised more than $1,500, but the money won’t actually be going to the Lions head coach; instead, it’s going to a better cause.
15. A REFUGE FOR REFUGEES
Down in Dallas, there’s a youth team you may have heard of called Vickery United, and this article takes a look at the help provided by FC Dallas defender Zach Loyd and his wife, Casey, as they work with area refugees.
