1. ROLFE'S OUT, ACCAM’S IN
D.C. United host the Chicago Fire tonight (7 pm ET, MLS LIVE, match preview), but the game will not present Chris Rolfe the opportunity to face his former side after he was suspended for one game by the MLS Disciplinary Committee. The Fire, meanwhile, should be able to call on David Accam despite rumors of injury and an impending international call-up.
2. TOUGH CHOICES IN DEFENSE
While the Philadelphia Union’s defense has been boosted by the emergence of Richie Marquez, the club know they face a tough challenge when the Columbus Crew SC visit tonight (7 pm ET, MLS LIVE, match preview). However, with Michael Parkhurst suspended for Crew SC, Gregg Berhalter has decisions to make regarding his own back line.
3. WHITECAPS GRATEFUL FOR OPTIONS
The Montreal Impact are looking to bounce back from their weekend defeat at the hands of the Chicago Fire, and they’ll get an early chance to do it when they host fellow Canadians Vancouver Whitecaps in a preview of August Amway Canadian Championship (8 pm ET, TSN1 in Canada, MLS LIVE in the US, match preview). The ‘Caps are facing plenty of travel in the next few days, leaving Carl Robinson glad his squad has some depth.
4. TESHO CHOOSES CANADA
The Canadian national team on Tuesday announced the squad for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers, and head coach Benito Floro's squad includes current MLS Rookie of the Year Tesho Akindele, finalizing his choice to represent birth country Canada over the US, where he grew up.
5. ALONSO OUT AS WELL
Chris Rolfe wasn’t the only one suspended by the MLS Disciplinary Committee, as Osvaldo Alonso will miss the Seattle Sounders' next game. And there's another Sounder who could be missing, as Obafemi Martins is now recovering from surgery on his broken nose.
6. SOUNDERS SOLD OUT
The Seattle Sounders had news of their own to announce on Tuesday, as the club has officially sold out the lower bowl of CenturyLink Field for the remainder of the regular season, leading the club to start their first season ticket priority list.
7. STADIUM NEWS
According to the Washington Post, the state of Virginia is making a push to lure D.C. United with a potential stadium plan in Loudoun County. Meanwhile, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser says there’s a “very generous deal on the table" for a D.C. United stadium.
8. PIRLO TO MLS?
There is news breaking in Europe on Wednesday morning that Juventus star and world soccer legend Andrea Pirlo has accepted a deal to make the move to MLS. The destination club? Reports say it's the Big Apple.
9. SALT LAKE LOOKING TO SURGE AT HOME
Real Salt Lake have had an up-and-down season so far, with head coach Jeff Cassar admitting, “We’re paying for our mistakes right now.” Yet with six of their next eight games at home, RSL will be looking to turn that around and climb back into the Western Conference playoff picture.
10. MONTERO, CASTILLO ... MANOTAS?
With all the paperwork taken care of, the Houston Dynamo were finally able to put Mauro Manotas in an orange jersey on Monday and, with the 19-year-old Colombian explaining what made him leave his home country and pursue the opportunity in MLS, could he be the next big star to emerge from the South American country?
11. WITH CALL-UPS COMING, LA ADD COVER
Robbie Keane has only just returned from injury, but he’ll be whisked away to play for the Republic of Ireland, as will goalkeeper Jaime Penedo as both answer international calls. With Penedo off to represent Panama, the Galaxy were set to be short at goalkeeper, but the club announced on Tuesday the signing of 2015 SuperDraft selection Andrew Wolverton.
12. US U-23S FINISH WITH A WIN
The US Under-23 national team finished their Toulon Tournament group stage with a 1-0 win over Qatar, thanks to a superbly taken goal from Julian Green, leaving the US record in the competition at 2-2-0. Only a French victory over the Netherlands by at least three goals on Thursday would extend the USA's stay in the tournament.
13. U-20S EARN PRAISE
Gedion Zelalem has earned plenty of praise for his performance in the US Under-20 national team's 4-0 win over New Zealand on Tuesday, and Tab Ramos’ whole team earned plaudits from the defeated hosts, with New Zealand coach Darren Bazeley stating, “I thought the USA played really well.”
14. COMING TO CANADA
The French Super Cup, played between the winners of the French Ligue 1 title and the winners of the French Cup, has been played outside of France since 2009, and on Tuesday it was announced that this year’s edition, played between Paris Saint-Germain and Olympique Lyon, will be played at the Montreal Impact’s Stade Saputo.
15. BYE-BYE, BLATTER
It a move that came as a surprise to everyone, FIFA President Sepp Blatter announced he would be stepping down from his position as the corruption scandal surrounding the sport's governing body continues to gather steam. US Soccer Federation president Sunil Gulati, a member of the FIFA Executive Committee, voted against Blatter last Friday and issued this statement following the news.
