Of late there have been a number of stories doing the rounds about a few lucky punters who have hit the jackpot after bagging a big winning bet or two. These stories are always promoted by the bookmaker with whom the punter placed the bets…as they look to piggy back on it as a 'good-news' story and seek our sympathy for having to pay-out such big sums of money.
I for one though, feel not one iota of pity for any bookmaker that takes such a hit. They deserve it and a heck of a lot more besides!
To explain just why I think this way (and why any self-respecting punter should too)…here are my
5 reasons on why we shouldn't have sympathy for bookies EVER!... 1) THEY ACTUALLY WANT US TO LOSE (IT'S EITHER THEM OR US!) My first point is the most important and it can often get lost in all the big PR stories on these outlandish big payouts. Despite appearances, you should never, ever forget that the bookmaker wants you to lose – no matter what they say.
After all, it's a simple fact of betting:
Bookmaker Wins. Punter Loses.
OR
Punter Wins. Bookmaker Loses This doesn't apply to all bookmakers, especially exchanges but in general
when betting with a traditional bookmaker there is only ever one long-term winner – either bookie or punter. Amongst all the hullabaloo of big payouts, this point can get blurred by the PR spin. Don't let it.
2) THEY DON'T TELL US WHEN THEY WIN Most major bookies employ a big team of PR specialists, all designed to tell us exactly how much they have lost as soon as they have a bad weekend.
Take Coral for example, they couldn't wait to tell us about the
punter that bagged over 300k by getting all 15 results right in their Football Jackpot the other weekend (from a £96 stake no less – quite the sum for such a wild bet!)
Yet they are remarkably coy about the weekends when they make major profits. I have yet to read a news story claiming
'Bookies Make £50 Million As All Favourites Lose'! Yet winning weekends do happen for the bookies and a heck of a lot more frequently than they would have you believe! They just don't write a press release when it happens.
