Can anyone stop Sebastian Giovinco? D.C. United couldn’t, after his brace led Toronto FC to a 2-1 win (HIGHLIGHTS). The Eastern Conference leading United tipped their hats to the Italian maestro afterward, while TFC's third straight victory has some players claiming that they're "real contenders."
2. THREE STRAIGHT FOR THE TIMBERS
The Portland Timbers secured their third consecutive win, 2-0, over the New England Revolution thanks to a late brace from Fanendo Adi (HIGHLIGHTS), a result that head coach Caleb Porter saw as a just reward for his team's performances all season. It was a different story for the Revolution, who were frustrated with two late decisive lapses.
3. RIMANDO RETURNS FOR RSL
With Cody Cropper replacing Nick Rimando on the USMNT roster, the Real Salt Lake 'keeper returned to Utah just in time to play mind games on a penalty kick and help his side preserve a 0-0 draw against Rocky Mountain Cup rivals Colorado Rapids (HIGHLIGHTS), who continue to struggling to find the back of the net.
4. SEEING RED IN SAN JOSE
The referee took center stage in Sunday's scoreless draw between the San Jose Earthquakes and FC Dallas (HIGHLIGHTS), issuing three red cards, including a controversial one for Mark Sherrod on his first start with the Quakes. San Jose were shown two of the three reds, and FCD were unhappy they couldn’t capitalize on their advantage.
5. WHITECAPS MAKE THEIR MARK IN LA
Carl Robinson had set his sights on ending the LA Galaxy’s home unbeaten streak and that’s just what his Vancouver Whitecaps side did, earning a 1-0 victory (HIGHLIGHTS) that has the 'Caps believing they can go toe to toe with the best in the league. The Galaxy struggled in the loss, failing to put a single shot on target for just the third time in their history.
6. ORLANDO OVERTURN A DEFICIT
For the second week in a row, Orlando City found themselves trailing 2-1 heading into the final minutes of a match and, for the second week in a row, they mounted a comeback, this time securing a 3-2 win over the Chicago Fire (HIGHLIGHTS). The disappointing loss brought back memories for the Fire, too, with a "stunned and shocked" Chicago side recalling their dismall 2014 campaign.
7. SPORTING FINALLY BEAT THE SOUNDERS
Sporting Kansas City broke a long streak on Saturday, earning their first victory over the Seattle Sounders since 2009. The 1-0 result (HIGHLIGHTS) came thanks to a Benny Feilhaber penalty, a call that left Sounders head coach Sigi Schmid less than impressed.
8. IMPACT BREAK THEIR ROAD CURSE
The Montreal Impact broke a record on Saturday, snagging their first road win since September 28, 2013, with a 2-1 victory against Columbus Crew SC at (HIGHLIGHTS). The result extended Crew SC's winless streak to five, and head coach Gregg Berhalter is shouldering the blame. Meanwhile, Crew SC defender Emanuel Pogatetz took to Facebook to express his displeasure about not playing.
9. NYCFC GRAB LANDMARK WIN
New York City FC ended their 11-game winless streak on Saturday, grabbing the first road win of their existence thanks to a 2-1 win at the Philadelphia Union (HIGHLIGHTS). Thomas McNamara's stunning long strike was the spark for a big "morale boost." Despite the loss, the Union, who had won three of four entering Saturday's match, are feeling pretty upbeat about their recent performances.
10. USWNT SET TO BEGIN PLAY AT WWC
The US women's national team will get their Women's World Cup slate underway on Monday night, when they'll take on Australia in Winnipeg (7:30 pm ET, Fox Sports 1, NBC Universo). The news over the weekend revolved around controversial goalkeeper Hope Solo, as new details emerged from her arrest last year.
11. CANADA OFF TO SOLID START
The Canadian women's national team got their World Cup campaign off to a solid, if not totally convincing, start on Saturday, with captain Christine Sinclair converting a stoppage-time penalty kick in a 1-0 win over China. The result left Canada tied for first in Group A with the Netherlands ahead of their Thursday match against New Zealand.
12. USMNT COMEBACK
Jurgen Klinsmann said his side was looking for results and it certainly showed on Friday, as the US national team scored two late goals to complete a 4-3 comeback win over the Netherlands (HIGHLIGHTS). While the team earned mixed ratings overall, captain Michael Bradley was pleased with the performance of all the US’ younger players.
13. INTERNATIONAL ROUND-UP
The weekend was one to remember for Gyasi Zardes, but it was a lot less pleasant for his LA Galaxy teammate Jaime Penedo and FC Dallas striker Blas Perez, whose Panama side lost 4-0 to Ecuador on Saturday. In other international action, Mexico suffered a 2-0 loss against Brazil in their final warm-up match ahead of the Copa America.
14. LAST CONCACAF SIDE STANDING
Having finished in second place in their group, the US Under-20s are now set to face off against Colombia in the Round of 16 at the U-20 World Cup on Wednesday. The Yanks are the only CONCACAF nation still alive in New Zealand, as Mexico were eliminated and Honduras got bounced by a 5-1 defeat to Germany.
15. US U-23s TAKE THIRD IN TOULON
The US Under-23s have taken the bronze at the Toulon Tournament after beating England 2-1 on Saturday. The win came thanks to a pair of penalties converted by Alonso Hernandez and Benji Joya, respectively.
