Kick Off: D.C. United keep on rolling, plus potential MLS moves for two USMNT midfielders
Here are the top 15 stories we’re following today:
1. DC'S COMEBACK STORY CONTINUES
The two worst teams in last season's Eastern Conference started 2014 by writing their own comeback tales. But Toronto FC’s has suffered a fairly dramatic twist, as they slipped to their second successive defeat to D.C. United, this one by a 3-0 scoreline (watch highlights here). Ben Olsen is on track to lead DC to a record turnaround, while Ryan Nelsen lambasted his side for what he saw as a lack of effort.
2. RED BULLS PROVE A ROAD POINT
A draw was not a a big help for either team. So naturally that’s what Real Salt Lake and the New York Red Bulls produced, playing to an entertaining 1-1 tie at Rio Tinto Stadium (watch highlights here). Yet Mike Petke’s side still proved a point, following their last road game – a 3-1 loss to the Philadelphia Union. The highlight of the game was Thierry Henry’s passed finish into the net from 20 yards, while its lowlight -- well, we all know what that was.
3. RELIEF FOR REVOLUTION
When one finally went in, the floodgates opened. The New England Revolution avoided a club record-tying losing streak of nine straight games, and they did so with aplomb. Their 3-0 win over Colorado on Wednesday night (watch highlights here) means the streak stops at eight, and Jay Heaps can sleep a bit easier. Rapids head coach Pablo Mastroeni, on the other hand, may be tossing and turning .
4. DRAW KINGS DRAW, AGAIN
We shouldn’t have expected any other result. The league’s most prolific drawers – the Chicago Fire and the Vancouver Whitecaps – met on Wednesday night, and guess what happened? Yup, they tied (watch highlights here). The Fire, who used Jeff Larentowicz at center back, have now drawn 12 of their 20 games in 2014, with the Caps at 11 from 21. Carl Robinson is getting tired of it all.
5. SACHA TO BECOME A STAR IN THE GALAXY?
Four years after leaving the league, Sacha Kljestan could be set for a return to his homeland. California to be precise. The LA Galaxy, who are reportedly keen to take the 28-year-old on a loan until the end of the season, have been linked with the midfielder with the mustache so famous even Zlatan Ibrahimovic commented on it.
6. YALLOP CONFIRMS FIRE'S INTEREST IN JONES
Speculation linking World Cup barnstormer Jermaine Jones with the Chicago Fire is gathering steam, as ESPN's Alexi Lalas reported on Wednesday's telecast that the deal is likely to happen, and Fire head coach Frank Yallop admitted his team's interest. A few goals like the one Jones scored against Portugal would be welcome at Toyota Park.
7. DE SANTIS OUT AS SPORTING DIRECTOR
Montreal Impact owner Joey Saputo announced that Nick De Santis had been relieved of his sporting-director duties on Wednesday because "the results are not at the levels of our expectations." Frank Klopas will stay on as coach and will also assume the role of director of player personnel.
8. MBOLHI FOR YOU
The cat, or rather the goalkeeper, is out the bag. Algerian World Cup star Rais Mbolhi’s signing was confirmed by the Philadelphia Union at a press conference on Wednesday. But Jim Curtin knows that he can only play one keeper at a time, right?
9. US, COLOMBIA TO MEET IN SAN ANTONIO?
After returning to action with a friendly in the Czech Republic on Sept. 3, the US national team will reportedly host Colombia in San Antonio six days later. The Alamodome, artificial turf and all, will reportedly be the venue.
10. NO FULL BRAZILIAN IN ORLANDO?
With the signing of Kaka already sealed, it had been suggested that Orlando City could become an outpost for Brazilian national teamers by the time MLS play starts in Orange County next March. But talks with former AC Milan and Real Madrid star Robinho have apparently broken down, and rumors of Joga Bonito icon Ronaldinho being considered have had cold water poured on them by reports from Orlando.
11. FRANKIE'S DAY OFF
Frankie Hejduk is turning 40, so what’s the natural way to celebrate the milestone for the Columbus Crew legend? With a beach party, of course! Frankie made more than 150 appearances for the Crew, and you can party with Hey-Dude himself this Saturday, providing you’re 21 and like Bob Marley.
12. HAMILTON HEADS TO PORTUGAL
From the Wilmington Hammerheads to Toronto FC to Clube Desportivo Trofense in Portugal, all in one week. That’s the story for teenager Jordan Hamilton, who was recalled by TFC from their USL PRO affiliate before being sent to the Portuguese Segunda Liga on loan. Hamilton has impressed at Wilmington and most recently scored for TFC in the friendly defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.
13. GREEN STAYING PUT WITH BAYERN FOR NOW
Despite interest from English Premier League clubs in taking Bayern Munich and US national team starlet Julian Green on loan, Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge told Sports Illustrated that Green is "something special" and that Bayern turned down loan offers from big clubs to keep Green with the team in 2014-15.
14. DESTINATION: PORTLAND
Headed to the Rose City for next week's 2014 AT&T MLS All-Star Game? There are just a few things going on in addition to the showcase game itself. Youth soccer, live music, a grilled-cheese throwdown, and even a tour of the temporary MLS Digital gigs … it'll all be happening.
15. BOOM OR BUST?
The World Cup affected just about everybody this summer in some way or another. On the financial side of things, aside from FIFA, who were the winners and losers? The Wall Street Journal takes a look at the financial impact of the world's largest sporting event.

Kick Off: Real Salt Lake vs. New York Red Bulls clash highlights four games on Wednesday night
Here are the top 15 stories we’re following today:
1. WORLD CUP HERO RETURNS AS RED BULLS, RSL TAKE CENTER STAGE
America’s World Cup hero will be hoping for a straightforward game on Wednesday night. No, not Kyle Beckerman. Mark Geiger, who makes his return to MLS after an impressive month in Brazil. There’s also the small matter of a high-profile game between Real Salt Lake and the New York Red Bulls (9 pm, ESPN2, match preview), with both sides hoping to boost their playoff tilt as the second half of the season kicks in.
2. EAST BATTLES CONTINUE AS DC HOSTS TORONTO
Two of the Eastern Conference's most improved sides, Toronto FC and D.C. United, meet Wednesday for the third time this year (7 pm ET, MLS LIVE, match preview), although this will be the first time they’ve played at RFK Stadium. Jermain Defoe scored in their first meeting in March, and the striker will return from suspension for this one (as TFC found out against Sporting KC, no Defoe often means no party). He might be joined by new acquisition Warren Creavalle, while on the other side, D.C. got some long-term defensive help by picking up center back Kofi Opare from the LA Galaxy in a Tuesday trade.
3. REVS' FUTILITY NEARS CLUB RECORD
New England is in need of a Revolution as they host the shorthanded Colorado Rapids Wednesday at Gillette Stadium (7:30 pm, MLS LIVE, match preview). Jay Heaps’ side has its last eight league games, which means one more defeat will equal the club’s worst losing streak ever.
4. FIRE TRY TO RELIGHT PLAYOFF CHALLENGE
Like New England, Chicago is in need of some Fire. They currently sit slumped four points off the playoff places in the Eastern Conference, while the Vancouver Whitecaps, their opponent Wednesday (8:30 pm ET, MLS LIVE, match preview) have drawn their last three league games (which does not sit well with coach Carl Robinson), with both teams scrambling for traction. Frank Yallop’s men are still hurting from the 5-1 loss at San Jose, and while the Fire’s wick shows no sign of catching light
5. CHANGES AFOOT IN MONTREAL
Chicago have been burning up the transfer wire, acquiring Sanna Nyassi from the Montreal Impact in exchange for Dilly Duka on Tuesday, and that may not be the only change happening in Quebec. Reports from Montreal indicate major changes to the club's technical staff (FRENCH) could be forthcoming, with club owner Joey Saputo scheduled to make a major announcement Wednesday morning.
6. 'JUNIOR' JONES TO FIND HIS FIRE?
With US national teammates Michael Bradley and Clint Dempsey already poster boys for MLS, Jermaine Jones could be next for a move across the Atlantic, according to transfer speculation, and the Chicago Fire are one of the teams reportedly looking at the Besiktas man as a potential designated player.
7.  IS M'BOLHI PHILADELPHIA'S BIG ANNOUNCEMENT?
Speaking of transfers, the Philadelphia Union have gone all mysterious on us. The club’s Twitter account revealed that a ‘major announcement’ will made on Wednesday but made no mention of what was in the offing. Consistent reports indicate (PORTUGUESE) it could be the signing of Algerian World Cup goalkeeper Rais M’Bolhi.
8. FIVE AND COUNTING FOR NYC FC
Considering how Jason Kreis’s Real Salt Lake squad was known for their midfield, it is perhaps unsurprising that New York City FC’s early transfer and trade activity has focused on midfielders. Kreis has added another player to his roster for next season, trading a third-round SuperDraft pick in 2016 to FC Dallas in exchange for Andrew Jacobson, who will spend the rest of 2014 on loan with Bob Bradley's Stabaek in Norway.
9. MORE HERZOG, BITTE
Focus has already turned to 2018 for the US national team, and the contract extension of assistant coach Andreas Herzog is further proof of US Soccer’s commitment to the Jurgen Klinsmann Project. The Austrian, who has stated that he hopes to coach the US U-23 team that will try to qualify for the Olympics in 2015, was a key part of Jurgen Klinsmann’s coaching team in Brazil.
10. WILL CANADIANS PREFER SOCCER TO HOCKEY?
Hockey players are Canada’s rock stars (although the Great White North does okay with those too: Bryan Adams, Joni Mitchell, to name a few). But Vancouver Whitecaps Designated Player Pedro Morales believes soccer could soon overtake hockey as Canada’s national pastime and has even put a timeframe on when he believes it will happen.
11. RONALDINHO AN MLS OPTION?
Almost as soon as Ronaldinho’s exit from Atletico Mineiro as a free agent was confirmed, the rumbles started. The Brazilian has long been linked with a move Stateside, and it now appears that the New York Red Bulls – who have a third DP spot to fill – could be considering a move to sign soccer’s favorite buck-toothed playmaker. Whatever happens, he won’t be joining the Crew.
12. CANADA'S GOLD-EN DAYS
The good times might seem some way off for Benito Floro and the current Canadian national team, but the 2000 Gold Cup-winning team is being honored with a place in the country’s Soccer Hall of Fame. Jason De Vos – already an individual inductee - scored one of the most famous goals in Canadian soccer history to clinch victory over Colombia in the final 14 years ago, with Carlo Corazzin adding a second-half penalty. Now the 2000 squad will have more than a medal to remember their triumph by.
13. KC CLASS OF 2014
In another Hall of Fame, Sporting Kansas City will induct club legends Lamar Hunt, Jimmy Conrad and current coach Peter Vermes into their Hall of Honor in an on-field ceremony at halftime of Friday’s home game against the Philadelphia Union.
14. NUMBER ONE ON THE FIELD, NUMBER TWO IN THE BOOTH
It might surprise you to learn that Tim Howard hasn’t turned into a GIF. Despite the immortality of digital records of his World Cup heroics, he’s still an actual goalkeeper and a pretty good color commentator, too. NBC Sports has signed the Everton and US star to its Premier League broadcasts on a multi-year deal, working up to 10 games this season.
15. HARDLY OUT OF HIS LEAGUE
While we list him here for obvious reasons, 15-year-old Norwegian Martin Odegaard may soon rise to the forefront of world transfer talk. The youngest goalscorer in Norwegian Tippaligaen history, Odegaard has been seeing regular playing time -- and producing -- with Stromsgodset (where he is a teammate of on-loan MLSer Jeb Brovsky), who are currently in second place. His skills are worth a look.

Kick Off: Ronaldinho is out of contract in Brazil, and that can only mean MLS transfer rumblings!
Here are the top 15 stories we're following today:
1. GALAXY LIGHT UP A DARKENED CENTURYLINK FIELD
There may well have been a power outage at CenturyLink Field, but the LA Galaxy brought all the power they needed, lighting up the Seattle Sounders with a 3-0 road win (watch the highlights). There were goals from Gyasi Zardes, Landon Donovan and Stefan Ishizaki as the Sounders got their eight-game August stretch off to the worst possible start.
2. LAMPARD TAKES TO TWITTER FOR A Q&A
New York City FC's latest signing Frank Lampard took the Twitter soapbox Monday to answer a few questions from MLS fans (and a few Chelsea supporters as well). The England international has not been surprised with the hunger for soccer he has found in the Big Apple, and would apparently rather come up against one Per Mertesacker-sized Charlie Adam than five Charlie Adam sized Per Mertesackers.
3. #ASKLAMPS COVERS THE IMPORTANT MATTERS
Like any self-respecting Twitter Q&A, NYCFC's account also faced its fair share of pressing questions from fans who perhaps misunderstood the trending hashtag. As far as it is know, Lampard does not have a problem with the 'I' in Pixar. And does not feel pain when you have to change a bulb.
4. RONALDINHO TO MLS?
There are a few players who will be linked with a move to North America until the day they retire. Some are even linked with MLS clubs after the retire (looking at you David Beckham). Ronaldinho is one of those players, and the bucktoothed, Brazilian star could finally be coming Stateside after leaving Atletico Mineiro as a free agent Monday.
5. JOHNSON TO RETURN TO CANADA FOLD
The midfielder might not have enjoyed as successful a season as he did in 2013, but Will Johnson can still claim to be one of MLS' best in his position. Yet it's been over a year since the Timbers man featured for Canadian national team, although Johnson insists his absence from Benito Floro's side hasn't been deliberate. But now the 27-year-old plans to return to international fold.
6. BORRIELLO TO MLS IN JANUARY?
32-year-old AS Roma striker Marco Borriello has been linked with a move to New York City FC. The former Italy international, who spent a portion of last season on loan at West Ham, has been a speculated target for MLS before - with the Montreal Impact most notably reported admirers - but Borriello could now join up with Jason Kreis and NYCFC in January.
7.  COSMOS GET LADE
Just a few weeks ago these two New York rivals came up against each other in the US Open Cup, but now the Red Bulls and the Cosmos would appear to be helping each other out. Connor Lade has been loaned out to the NASL outfit, giving the 24-year-old much needed game time, while giving the Cosmos more options at fullback.
8. BESLER NAMED TO GOAL 50
The newly DP'd Sporting Kansas City defender endured a weekend he'll want to forget after being shown two yellows in the win over Toronto FC. But Matt Besler's week started off on a better note, as he was named in the prestigious Goal 50, a ranking of the best 50 players in world soccer.
9. GREENER ON THE OTHER SIDE
The US national team's World Cup hero - no, not Mark Geiger - has reported for Bayern Munich preseason training, where he can practice making full connection on volleys. The 19-year-old knows what he wants from the coming season, and it's not a loan away from the German champions.
10. THIS IS NOT A DRILL
Pablo Mastroeni's Colorado Rapids have played their fair share of whirlwind games this season (the 3-3 draw with the Philadelphia Union springs to mind) but they haven't come up against something like a twister. Until yesterday, that is. The tornado danced through Dick's Sporting Goods Park on Monday with even more ferocity than Marvin Chavez did with Chivas USA back in Monday.
11. DOWNTOWN SITE CRUCIAL FOR MIAMI
Commissioner Don Garber says that MLS will not expand to Miami without a downtown site for the stadium. The search for a location has come up against a number of challenges since David Beckham's involvement with the franchise was announced some months ago, but Miami remains a "top priority," according to Garber.
12. GRAB A GABBIDON
As a man who has seemingly played for almost every English Premier League club, it's perhaps unsurprising that Danny Gabbidon is on the move again. But this time the Welsh defender is keen on a move to MLS, insisting that his experience at international level would help him adapt to the demands of North American soccer.
13. GEIGER AND OUT
Referee Mark Geiger will take charge of his first MLS game since the World Cup when he officiates Real Salt Lake's home against the New York Red Bulls on Wednesday. The veteran official reffed three games at the tournament in Brazil, impressing everyone besides Nigerian coach Stephen Keshi, and will now return to league action having taken charge of just three MLS games in 2014.
14. CREW RECRUITS
The summer transfer window deadline day (August 6) is fast approaching, but Columbus Crew coach Gregg Berhalter says he won't be pressured into signing new players just for the sake of it. "It's not really a big concern of mine," the former US international insisted. "We want to do things the right way." Although the Crew boss did give an insight into how MLS clubs navigate the European market.
15. RED BULLS FIND THEIR DP
Mike Petke still has a free Designated Player spot, but the Red Bulls have signed another kind of DP, with the capture of French defender Damien Perrinelle sealed on Monday. The 30-year-old had been trial with RBNY before the announcement, doing enough to convince Petke that he deserved a permanent deal.
