Day 1 at Aintree! Calipto Triumph backers are still fuming that the stirrup broke and have convinced themselves he would have beaten Tiger Roll, so naturally they are all over the 7/2 today. We'd much rather be on the 5/1 Activial, who skipped Cheltenham for this having looked really smart in the Adonis. 15 runners spells danger though, so look out for the Paddy Power and Betfair Sportsbook refunds.
It's Dynaste v Conti v the Lieutenant in the Bowl, with Pipe's grey 15/8f back up to 3m. That will suit and he won easily at this meeting last year, so the case is clear. First Lieutenant beat Conti in this 12 months ago and is fresher this time around, so should confirm the form, and the booking of Barry Geraghty is very interesting. Hopefully Dynaste gets smashed in the market and inflates FL's price.
Next up is another vindication job with The New One, but at 2/5 you're paying a bad price. Mossey Joe is another 7/4 shorty who will be punted at any price; he's a Gold Cup horse on talent. Fellow Irish raider Warne has held up eyecatchingly against him at 4/1. Arnaud looked made for the 2m handicap when blazing a trail at Doncaster, but a mark of 148 is punishing and they've stuck 7lb highly-regarded 7lbs claimer Ger Fox on top as a result. Pricewise doesn't care and has put him up at 11/2; see Road to Cheltenham's alternative below.
The market for the penultimate race is bizarre, as you have the Arkle winner a bigger price than a horse who fell at the first in the JLT. Oscar Whisky is ugly at 9/4 with 11/4 Western Warhorse fairly insulting. Uxizandre, Dodging Bullets and Fox Appeal could all put it together and win. |

| TIP OF THE DAY | |
|
| Arnaud's mark of 148 looks too steep in the 2m novice handicap chase (16:15), so the vote goes to maiden Turn Over Sivola (8/1). He bustled up Dodging Bullets and Hinterland on his first two runs, before not getting home over 2 1/2m when beaten by the Baby Mix. Alan King's yard was about to shut down when he was a decent 10l 3rd to Next Sensation in a hot handicap after Christmas, which if stable form is anything to go by, probably wasn't his true running. Returning last month from a break he jumped and travelled well despite not looking fully wound up, and there looks a stack of improvement to come.
