Meanwhile, the Dynamo’s own slim playoff hopes have taken a hit due to international call-ups. 2. CLUB OVER COUNTRY Depending how tonight’s game against Houston goes, TFC’s remaining three fixtures could be more important than ever. Kyle Bekker certainly understands that and so the TFC midfielder has dropped out of the Canadian national team squad to try and help his club. 3. YOUR MOVE, PORTLAND If the Portland Timbers can win tonight’s match against the San Jose Earthquakes (10:30 pm ET, MLS LIVE), their second encounter in five days, then they’ll climb back into the playoff places and really put the pressure on the Vancouver Whitecaps, their rivals for the West's final playoff spot, ahead of VWFC's Friday night meeting with the Seattle Sounders. 4. KAMARA’S CREW Get practicing those heart-shaped hands, Columbus: Kei Kamara is on his way back to MLS. Although the Sierra Leone international isn’t eligible to play for the remainder of this season, the Crew used their top spot in the allocation order to grab the forward, whom head coach Gregg Berhalter sees as the club's new No. 9. 5. READY FOR A REBRAND While he can’t play, Kamara has arrived just in time for the official launch of the Columbus Crew’s new logo, set to be unveiled tonight at 6:30 pm ET. WONDO'S REDEMPTION Having initially failed to make the latest US roster, Chris Wondolowski had spoken about how he would have to fight to earn his place. Well, the fight is over, as Wondo has been officially added to the US squad for Friday's match against Ecuador. It does mean the Quakes will be missing their star striker tonight, though. 7. O CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN As the US national team trains at Harvard, Jurgen Klinsmann has named Landon Donovan as captain for the Galaxy star’s final international game. Donovan will join the team on Thursday and, while he’s only expected to see roughly 30 minutes of game time, he doesn’t believe this appearance would have happened at all if not for U.S. Soccer president Sunil Gulati. 8. CHOICES, CHOICES New York Red Bulls center back Matt Miazga is a man in demand right now, receiving call-ups from both the Polish U21 team and the US Under-23 side. However, as far as international soccer is concerned, Miazga is believed to favor the US over Poland. 9. REAL RESPONSE With Real Salt Lake still looking to guarantee their place in the MLS playoffs, while also trying to avoid dropping into the Knockout Round, their squad suddenly finds itself plagued by injuries and international call-ups. Will it affect their game against San Jose this weekend? According to Kyle Beckerman, “No matter who plays, we’ve just got to respond.” 10. A DEEP DEFENSE The LA Galaxy back line has put together a league-leading performance this season, a fact that’s made all the more impressive considering just how often Bruce Arena has had to rotate his defenders. 11. REMEMBERING DI VAIO There are a number of MLS and US veterans retiring this season, with Donovan chief among them. Not to be overlooked is the fact that Marco Di Vaio is also calling it a career, and the Italian could quite rightly lay claim to being, even at 38, one of the best forwards to ever grace the league. 12. CASCADIA CUP CONCLUSION The Sounders host the Whitecaps on Friday in a game that will decide the winner of this season’s Cascadia Cup, just as all the relevant parties have come to an agreement over the competition's trademark. 13. SOUNDERS GETTING HEALTHY While the Seattle Sounders were able to keep hold of Clint Dempsey for this weekend’s Cascadia clash, they have lost DeAndre Yedlin to the USMNT, a fact that head coach Sigi Schmid seems OK with now that his other defensive options are suddenly starting to look a bit healthier. 14. THE WAITING GAME The New York Times says that New York City FC’s signing of Frank Lampard brings the league “authenticity." Now the only question is whether he'll be there from day one, or extend his loan stay with Manchester City. His manager, Jason Kreis, says he'll be back for training camp and many are in agreement. 15. WRITER’S BLOCK With Rais M’Bolhi away with Algeria, Zac MacMath will be back in goal for the Philadelphia Union this weekend and the goalkeeper spoke astutely about his time on the bench. SACRAMENTO BEEFING UP Sacramento Republic FC continue to make their case to become an MLS expansion team, announcing announcing a host of new investors on Monday, including UFC fighter Urijah Faber. 2. KLINSMANN'S KIDS Jurgen Klinsmann named his roster for the US national team's upcoming friendly against Ecuador, and it includes six MLSers as well as Minnesota United FC winger Miguel Ibarra, the first player to be called up from the NASL in the modern era. There could be more players on the way, though, as Klinsmann indicated the group may well change for the second October friendly against Honduras. There's no doubt the veterans remain a big part of his plans moving forward. 3. GALAXY'S SHIELD CHASE While Landon Donovan feels he'll be back in time from Friday's farewell game to play for the LA Galaxy on Sunday, Robbie Keane definitely won't be available after the Irish striker was called up to play for the Republic of Ireland. But whatever happens against FC Dallas, the Supporters' Shield will be decided during two encounters with the Seattle Sounders at the end of the month. 4. IRREPLACEABLE DONOVAN With Donovan set to retire at the end of the season, how will the LA Galaxy replace their record-breaking superstar? According to LA president Chris Klein, "you can't replace Landon Donovan," but the Galaxy do remain committed to having three Designated Players. 5. INTERNATIONAL ROUND-UP Plenty of MLSers boarded planes this week for international duty. The Columbus Crew's Kevan George is meeting up with Trinidad and Tobago, two of Orlando City's youngsters, Rafael Ramos and Estrella, are on their way to join up with Portugal's U-20 side, and a whole host of other call-ups will affect just about every team in MLS as well (get the complete list here). 6. NO NGUYEN SITUATION The USMNT camp might be in his backyard, but Lee Nguyen won't be joining up with the red-white-and-blue. Nguyen's having a fantastic season, but with the New England Revolution still needing a few points to make their playoff place secure, he's completely focused on his club's success. 7. WHITECAPS WINNING WAYS Sebastian Fernandez's two goals against FC Dallas were enough to earn the Uruguayan the MLS Player of the Week award, but with the Portland Timbers still snapping at their heels, Erik Hurtado could play an even bigger role in deciding the Vancouver Whitecaps' playoff fate. 8. DI VAIO'S FINAL GIFT? With Marco Di Vaio set to hang up his boots soon, the Montreal Impact made him a touching tribute. ANOTHER RECORD FOR LD With an assist in the LA Galaxy’s 3-0 win over Toronto FC (HIGHLIGHTS) on Saturday, Landon Donovan became the all-time MLS assist leader, with 136 to his name. Robbie Keane was full of praise for his teammate’s latest landmark, and the striker also scored two goals to further his own quest for the MVP award. On the Toronto side, head coach Greg Vanney is playing down the impact of the result. 2. FERNANDEZ GRABS THE GOALS Things may have gotten a little out of hand during the Vancouver Whitecaps' 2-0 victory over FC Dallas (HIGHLIGHTS) on Saturday, and while the home team were full of praise for goalscoring hero Sebastian Fernandez, the visitors' attack just ran out of ideas. 3. TIMBERS KEEP UP THE PRESSURE With the Whitecaps' win already final, the Portland Timbers knew they needed a result against the San Jose Earthquakes and, while it may have been in doubt for a while, the Timbers came from behind to ensure a 2-1 victory (HIGHLIGHTS). With their faint playoff hopes extinguished, the Quakes attributed the result to “dumb luck.” 4. SOUNDERS MARCH ON The unstoppable pairing of Clint Dempsey and Obafemi Martins once again combined beautifully to help lift the Seattle Sounders to a 4-1 victory over the Colorado Rapids (HIGHLIGHTS) and move back above the LA Galaxy in the race for the Supporters' Shield (based on the wins tiebreaker). The result also eliminates the Rapids from playoff contention, and head coach Pablo Mastroeni is planning to take a good look at where it all went wrong this year. 5. NEW YORK OVERCOME ADVERSITY The Houston Dynamo’s playoff hopes took a blow due to their inability to score during their 1-0 loss Saturday to the New York Red Bulls (HIGHLIGHTS). With all the speculation surrounding Red Bulls' star players off the field, you could perhaps forgive the players for being a little distracted, and Mike Petke praised their character in earning the win while also playing down a man after Tim Cahill’s red card. 6. REMEMBER ME, S'IL VOUS PLAIT “I just want people to remember, hopefully, me. Because of my work and that’s it.” That’s all Thierry Henry, who scored the game-winner vs. Houston, hopes to achieve at the end of his career. But it seems the Frenchman’s time with the New York Red Bulls might not be coming to an end after all. 7. A POSITIVE DRAW While it may not seem like it, Friday's 0-0 draw between D.C. United and Sporting Kansas City (HIGHLIGHTS) was a good result for both teams. For United, the point ensured their place in the playoffs, while Kansas City were able to post a much-needed shutout. 8. MOVING ON UP The New England Revolution strengthened their hold on second place in the Eastern Conference thanks to a 2-1 win over the Columbus Crew (HIGHLIGHTS) on Saturday. Although Lee Nguyen and Jermaine Jones got the goals for the Revs, their goalkeeper, Bobby Shuttleworth, was the star. The result leaves the Crew in fifth place, but manager Gregg Berhalter is glad their fate still remains in their own hands. 9. DEFENSIVE DISPLAY DOWNS RSL Real Salt Lake needed a win against Chivas USA on Sunday afternoon to guarantee their playoff place and they came up short, losing 1-0 (HIGHLIGHTS). While RSL were frustrated by a defensive display from Chivas, the performance has the Goats feeling positive heading into the final month of their season. 10. MEGA MINUTES FOR MAPP In a game that was memorable for little else, Justin Mapp made his return from injury and subsequently logged his 20,000th minute as an MLS player as the Montreal Impact drew 0-0 with the Chicago Fire (HIGHLIGHTS). With the result, Chicago can no longer qualify for the playoffs and, as such, Frank Yallop has begun looking ahead to 2015. 11. DI VAIO CALLS IT QUITS While not altogether unexpected, on Friday Marco Di Vaio officially announced his impending retirement from soccer. The Italian star will see out the remainder of the MLS season with the Montreal Impact but cited family commitments as the main reason for calling time on his career. 12. SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP After the New England Revolution signed a partnership agreement with Sporting Clube de Portugal, it seems more and more clubs are forming beneficial links with foreign teams. Colorado were one of the first to do so when they partnered with Arsenal, and the two clubs will be holding talks this week on how to improve that relationship. 13. US TEAMS TAKING SHAPE Jurgen Klinsmann named his roster for the US national team's first October friendly against Ecuador on Monday morning, but we already knew one player who was going to be called up.
