KINGS OF THE REPUBLIC The Sacramento Republic saw a change in ownership on Thursday, with Kevin Nagle, a part owner of the NBA’s Sacramento Kings, purchasing a controlling interest in the club. It's a move that Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson called “a big win for Republic FC and our efforts to secure an MLS franchise.” 4. BECKHAM’S NEW LOCATION? After seeing his previous locations rejected, has David Beckham found another potential site for his Miami-based soccer specific stadium? 5. TURNING IT AROUND As Chivas USA attempt to turn things around both on and off the field, the club travels to Ohio on Sunday to take on the Columbus Crew (3 pm ET, Unimas in the US, MLS LIVE in Canada). Could this game also mark the return of Bernardo Añor for the home side? 6. BOCANEGRA CALLS TIME Fans at Crew stadium will get another chance to honor a departing US national team hero on Sunday after Carlos Bocanegra announced he will be retiring at the end of the season. BUILDING THE FUTURE As Houston's ACL absentees continue to grow, it seems players from both the city's soccer franchises are helping each other through their recoveries. The Dynamo host the Montreal Impact on Saturday (8:30 pm ET, MLS LIVE) with the Canadian side announcing not only a new training facility and a change to their management structure, but also a brand new USL PRO team, FC Montreal, that will take the field in 2015. 8. CAN UNION MAKE THINGS WORSE FOR TFC? Toronto FC and the Philadelphia Union play the second of their back-to-back encounters this weekend (Saturday, 2 pm ET, Univision Deportes), and while Maurice Edu is looking forward to his return to Toronto, the Union star is hoping to heap even more playoff pressure on the Canadian side. 9. NO CONSISTENCY While Sporting Kansas City may have lost three games in a row, things look worse for the New York Red Bulls after falling out of the playoff spots. The Red Bulls need a good run now to climb back in but, as Thierry Henry notes ahead of the two side's meeting on Saturday (7:30 pm ET, NBCSN in the US, MLS LIVE in Canada), “consistency hasn’t been something we have dealt with pretty well here”. 10. PLAYING FOR PLACES Real Salt Lake and FC Dallas are set to battle it out for playoff position on Saturday (10 pm ET, MLS LIVE, Free stream of the week on MLSsoccer.com). RSL could soon be welcoming back Alvaro Saborio, while FCD coach Oscar Pareja doesn’t believe his side will be signing any more players this season. 11. OPTIONS UPFRONT? D.C. LIKE RIDING A BICYCLE The US got the new cycle off to a good start with a 1-0 win over the Czech Republic in Prague (watch highlights here). Alejandro Bedoya scored the only goal, but it was Nick Rimando, the only MLS representative in the squad, who helped ensure the result for the US with a strong second half. 2. PERFORMANCES AND POINTS After the game, Jurgen Klinsmann felt his young side took a "huge step", but what did the press think of the US' performance and what conclusions, if any, can be drawn from this friendly? Fabian Johnson was once again one of the US' strongest players during Wednesday night's friendly, and the right back is relishing a new-found responsibility with the national team. 3. AN AMBITIOUS GOAL Jurgen Klinsmann drew a lot of criticism for stating, however realistically, that the US could not win the World Cup in Brazil. Yet the German seems to have a new outlook going into his first complete cycle as head man, claiming before Wednesday's game that he believes his side can reach the semifinals in 2018. 4. SKC did lead the game at one point, but some heroics from Lee Nguyen helped turn things around for the Revolution. 6. SOUNDERS EXTEND THEIR LEAD AT THE TOP The Seattle Sounders opened a five-point gap at the top of the Western Conference with a 4-2 win over Chivas USA (watch highlights here), leading head coach Sigi Schmid to promise, "This isn't last year." All four of Seattle's goals came in a first half which Chivas USA coach Wilmer Cabrera labelled embarrassing. 7. VEGAS ON HOLD? Wednesday saw the Las Vegas City Council debate the proposal to build a $200 million soccer stadium in the city. However, anyone who was hoping for a resolution on the day will be disappointed to learn that the vote on the matter has been delayed until Oct. 1. 8. GOOD NEWS FOR UNITED Things are looking better and better for D.C. United fans, as it seems that Ben Olsen is close to signing a new long-term contract with the club. Not only that but, according to Olsen himself, it seems United could soon be welcoming back long-absent star Chris Pontius. However, it's not all good news, as Chris Rolfe injured his arm in training on Tuesday. 9. ORLANDO MAGIC With Orlando City entering MLS next season, the league's 21st team ensured they will leave the USL PRO on a high after a 0-0 draw with the Wilmington Hammerheads guaranteed Orlando's third regular-season title in four years. 10. TARGET ACQUIRED? Having pretty much confirmed the news via their own website, it seems the Colorado Rapids are closing in on a new signing to help ease their injury woes in defense. There's been no official confirmation of that player's identity, but the general consensus is that it's Englishman Zat Knight. 11. DYNAMO IN SAFE HANDS Tally Hall may be out for the season, but do the Houston Dynamo have a perfect replacement on their hands in the form of Tyler Deric? Despite just four MLS starts to his name, the Homegrown Player has been with the club in some form since 2007, and his teammates certainly think he's up to the task. 12. RECORD IN SIGHT FOR BWP? Bradley Wright-Phillips may have been shut out against D.C. United but, with nine games left to go for the New York Red Bulls, the Englishman is growing increasingly confident that he can break MLS' long-standing single-season goal record. 13. CREW WIN WITH HELP FROM AFAR The Columbus Crew scrimmaged USL PRO affiliate Dayton Dutch Lions on Wednesday, and while the Crew ran out comfortable winners, some eagle-eyed members of the press noticed a Manchester City player training with the Crew. Could it be a new signing? Not so fast. 14. BIENVENIDO, COPA CENTROAMERICANA The Copa Centroamericana, which helps determines the competitors for next summer's Gold Cup, got underway at RFK Stadium last night. Costa Rica handed Nicaragua a comprehensive 3-0 defeat, Honduras beat Belize 2-0, thanks to two own goals, while the Seattle Sounders Marco Pappa stepped up to help lead Guatemala to a 2-1 victory over El Salvador. 15. Both teams are very much in the playoff hunt, and Union coach Jim Curtin believes his side can grab a win despite a number of international absentees. 2. JONES TO MAKE HOME DEBUT? Jermaine Jones could make his home debut tonight when the New England Revolution host Sporting Kansas City (7:30 pm ET, MLS LIVE), and if Jones' stats from the game against Toronto are any indication, then the Revs may well extend their current unbeaten streak. An ailing Kansas City will be calling on Aurélien Collin to help prevent that, but could this be the defender's final year with the club? 3. WHATS NEXT FOR CHIVAS USA? It's a case of top vs bottom in the Western Conference when Chivas USA host the Seattle Sounders (10:30 pm ET, MLS LIVE), with the Goats having lost the last six head-to-head encounters. CLIMB OUT THE WINDOW While Julian Green and Jurgen Klinsmann are both excited about the player's loan move to Hamburg, was the summer transfer window perhaps unkind to American players? In the case of Brek Shea, Klinsmann certainly thinks so, and it seems the midfielder isn't too happy about it either. 10. RED BULLS STILL ON TRACK? Following their defeat to D.C. United on Sunday, the New York Red Bulls found themselves outside the playoff places, but Mike Petke is still fully confident they'll climb back in, and his optimism is buoyed by the news that, despite having to leave Sunday's game early, Chris Duvall isn't actually injured. 11. With the removal of Ryan Nelsen as TFC head coach, some argue that the coach’s downfall had as much to do with the staff he surrounded himself with as his own performance. STRENGTH IN NUMBERS In the meantime, Sporting Kansas City will be looking to avoid three defeats in a row when they take on the New England Revolution this Wednesday. The club has recalled Jimmy Medranda from his loan with Oklahoma City Energy to provide some extra options. 13. HALA HERNANDEZ Mexican forward Javier Hernández saw his dreams come true on Monday when, having been relegated to a bench role for Manchester United, the striker completed a year-long loan move to Real Madrid.
