Kick Off: Erick 'Cubo' Torres helps Chivas USA gain ground, TFC hold Chicago and multiple teams make roster moves
Here are the top 15 soccer stories we're following today and don't forget to vote for both the Etihad Airways Player of the Month and your MLS All-Star selections
1. 10-MAN TORONTO HOLD ON FOR A DRAW
Despite playing the majority of the game with a one-man advantage, the Chicago Fire were only able to manage a 1-1 draw against 10-man Toronto FC (watch highlights here). To Chicago boss Frank Yallop, the game told a familiar story, while Toronto's Ryan Nelsen is hopeful Luke Moore's red card will be rescinded.
2. TORRES STRIKES AGAIN
Chivas USA climbed off the bottom of the Western Conference following a 1-0 win over the San Jose Earthquakes (watch highlights here). The result came on the back of yet another Erick Torres goal, consigning the Quakes to their third consecutive defeat and placing them bottom of the West.
3. THE FIRST CUT IS THE DEEPEST
Following their latest result, the San Jose Earthquakes may be  looking to make a signing or two, and it just so happens there's some space on their roster following the news on Wednesday that the Quakes have cut 2014 draft picks Ryan Nell and Joe Sofia, as well as 2012 pick Sam Garza.
4. ADI DASSLED
The Portland Timbers got in on the action as well, releasing midfielder Aaron Long, but one Timber who isn't going anywhere is Fanendo Adi, with the club's new signing settling into life in the Pacific Northwest quickly.
5. VALDES VALUE
Is Carlos Valdes ever coming back to the Philadelphia Union? The defender is currently in Brazil competing with the Colombian national team, but interim Union head coach Jim Curtin has stated, "he's a guy we think for the long term we want him in a Philadelphia Union jersey."
6. KAKA'S GOALS
Having been officially unveiled to the world on Tuesday, Orlando City's new Designated Player Kaka spent the day talking to the press (in four languages), making his ambitions clear as day. He also envisions plenty more of the game's elite players following his lead and looking to move to MLS.
7. IMPACT SIGN A NEW DP
Ignacio Piatti to the Montreal Impact has been rumored for the longest time, but on Wednesday it finally became a reality, with the Argentine midfielder joining the club as their latest Designated Player. However, Piatti won't be joining Montreal on the field until his current club, San Lorenzo, finish their run in the Copa Libertadores.
8. NEW FACE FOR THE CREW?
Are the Columbus Crew close to signing a new forward? According to the Columbus Dispatch, they could have one as early as this week, although Gregg Berhalter insists he's also happy with the core group he currently has.
9. BRADLEY'S BROTHER
Bradley Wright-Phillips has become one of the New York Red Bulls' best players, so could he soon be joined by his brother? Shaun Wright-Phillips has long been a rumored target, but Bradley has once again reiterated that he doesn't know what his brother might be planning to do.
10. DONOVAN'S TWO CENTS
One of the main debates following the US' exit is whether or not Landon Donovan could have made a difference in the last 16, and the LA Galaxy star weighed in with his own view both on the Dan Patrick Show and when talking to reporters after Galaxy training.
11. WORLD-WIDE RESPECT
While the loss to Belgium will linger in the minds of USMNT players and fans forever, it earned additional respect for two veterans of European soccer, as both Tim Howard and Geoff Cameron were named among the top players of the round. Writers in the UK also came up with 33 reasons - one more than there are teams in the World Cup - to love the US national team.
12. HERRERA 2018?
Miguel Herrera helped turn Mexico from CONCACAF laughingstocks into a side that almost knocked the Netherlands out of the World Cup, and it seems the Mexico boss is keen to have another go. Is he the right man to lead the country in 2018?
13. GIVE US FOUR
With strong showings from three of the four CONCACAF sides in Brazil, has the confederation done enough to merit an automatic fourth World Cup spot? CONCACAF President Jeffrey Webb may be biased, but he certainly thinks so.
14. TIM HOWARD SAVES US ALL
Tim Howard has become an overnight sensation following his performance against Belgium, leading to both a petition for office and another great internet meme. The newly crowned secretary of defense even got a call from the real secretary of defense, not to mention one from his boss, US President Barack Obama.
15. UNFORGIVEABLE
Unfortunately, while we've seen plenty of soccer's best moments recently, now we have to focus on one of its worst, as John Bieniewicz, a local referee in the Detroit area, has died after being punched by a player while refereeing an adult league game.

Kick Off: USMNT go down swinging in World Cup, leaving two MLS games to brighten your Wednesday
Here are the top 15 soccer stories we're following today
1. END OF THE LINE FOR DEFIANT US
Sadly, all good things must come to an end, and so it was with the US' World Cup run after a 2-1 loss to Belgium on Tuesday evening (watch highlights here). Still, the US went down in style, fighting for an equalizer until the final seconds. What three things were there to take away from the result and who, apart from Tim Howard, played the best game?
2. THE HUMAN WALL
The man of the match for the US was undoubtedly Tim Howard, who, under large spells of pressure from the Belgians, stood on his head to keep the US in the game. Howard set a new record for most recorded saves in a World Cup game and drew plenty of praise from national team coach Jurgen Klinsmann.
3. LOOKING FORWARD
While the tournament may be over for the national team, the general consensus so far seems to suggest two things: There is plenty to look forward to in the future, especially from players like DeAndre Yedlin and Julian Green, and the real winner of the tournament was soccer in the US.
4. FOUR MORE YEARS
The US national team's strong performance at the tournament has led to increased interest in head coach Jurgen Klinsmann, but following the defeat on Tuesday, the under-contract German believes he will still be leading the US come Russia 2018.
5. NO DATE WITH MESSI
Had the US advanced, they would be playing Argentina on Saturday after the South American side overcame Switzerland 1-0 to reach the quarterfinals. The Swiss did not make it easy, though, and it took the better part of 120 minutes for the Argentines to find a breakthrough.
6. KAKA ARRIVES
Orlando City have signed their first Designated Player, with Brazilian star and former FIFA World Player of the Year Kaka signing a guaranteed three-and-a-half year contract. The midfielder described his signing as a dream come true and has already set his sights on winning an MLS championship.
7. TFC GETTING DOWN TO BUSINESS
Despite his impressive golazo on Friday, Gilberto will not feature in Toronto FC's line-up due to injury when they take on the Chicago Fire Wednesday night (8:30 pm ET, MLS LIVE, TSN in Canada) at Toyota Park. It's all part of a particularly busy month for TFC, but their opponents will be looking to set a few things right.
8. QUAKES NEED GOALS
Chivas USA come into their Wednesday game against the San Jose Earthquakes (10:30 pm ET, MLS Live, TSN in Canada) on the back of a win, and while the Quakes look to avoid three defeats in a row, they know they'll need to score some goals in order to do it.
9. FERNANDEZ EXIT
After starting the first 15 games at left back, Cristian Fernandez was absent from D.C. United's 1-0 loss to the Seattle Sounders. Now we know why: The club and player have mutually agreed to part ways.
10. SPONSORED BY...
The Houston Dynamo had an announcement of their own to make on Tuesday, revealing BHP Billiton, a global resources company with strong local ties, as their new jersey sponsor, the Dynamo's first jersey sponsor since they ended their previous deal back in February 2013.
11. MARI SIDELINED
Jose Mari has become an important part of the Colorado Rapids lineup so it'll come as disappointing news to learn that the Spanish midfielder has been ruled out for up to a month after spraining his ankle in training. That might be part of the reason the Rapids went out and acquired Carlos Alvarez from Chivas USA in exchange for Nathan Sturgis.
12. OCHOA A GOOD FIT?
Guillermo Ochoa was in need of a new club prior to the World Cup, and after the tournament Mexico's goalkeeper had, he certainly won't be short of suitors. Would he be a good fit for the Premier League? Former US no.1 Brad Friedel, who's spent most of his career in the English league, suggests maybe not.
13. MILLER'S OUT
Costa Rica's World Cup campaign marches on to a showdown with the Netherlands but, unfortunately, it's the end of the road for Roy Miller, as the New York Red Bulls left back has been ruled out for the rest of the tournament due to injury.
14. ADDED EDGE
With the US and Mexico reaching the last 16 and Costa Rica making history by reaching the quarterfinals, has their hard work helped give CONCACAF teams a psychological edge in future tournaments?
15. I BELIEVE IN I BELIEVE
We may not be hearing it in a US men's national team context for a while, but the US fan chant of 'I Believe' is easily one of the most recognizable and positive around. So where did it come from and what does it mean?

Kick Off: US get ready for Belgium, Orlando City prepare for a special announcement
Here are the top 15 soccer stories we’re following today:
1. WHAT STANDS BETWEEN HERE AND THE WORLD CUP QUARTERFINALS
The US national team takes on Belgium on Tuesday (4 pm ET, ESPN, Univision in the US, CBC in Canada) with a spot in the World Cup quarterfinals up for grabs. Can the US team do it?
2. TALKING TACTICS
The Shin Guardian is required reading to preview every USA game. He has a strong take on what Michael Bradley needs to do against Belgium. For his part, Bradley wants more at the World Cup and is looking to improve his form in Tuesday's game. It could be argued that a change of tactics could help Bradley , but with things working well enough for the US so far, perhaps the team would be better off focusing on other areas.
3. REFEREE CONSPIRACIES?
Jurgen Klinsmann, ever the zen master, started planting the seed of possible officiating questions, when he expressed his "concerns" about Algerian referee Djamel Haimoudi, who is assigned to the Belgium-USA game. "But is it a good feeling? No," Klinsi said. "He’s coming from the same group with Belgium and Algeria … and he’s able to speak French with their players on the field and not with us."
4. BELIEVE THE HYPE
As has become required for each of the USMNT's matches, here are a few pump-up videos. This one asks us to flip the script. This one has eagles and jet planes and the biggest -- literally -- US soccer fans anywhere: the Budweiser Clydesdales. and eagles.
5. PLENTY OF RESPECT
Ahead of the game against Belgium, everything has been incredibly civil, with both the US and Belgium talking of how much they respect each other. Tim Howard has spoken of the danger the Red Devils pose while Belgium's Kevin Mirallis has in turn been talking up Howard and Clint Dempsey.
6. INJURY UPDATES
While Belgium worry about injuries to Vincent Kompany and Thomas Vermaelen, it looks like Marouane Fellaini is going to be good to go. Meanwhile, the US got some good news in that Jozy Altidore is apparently fit and ready to be called upon.
7. THE SOCCER NATION GROWS
When the cameras pan the crowd during the US-Belgium match be sure to keep an eye out for Teddy Goalsevelt, otherwise known as Mike D’Amico,  who so caught the attention of the American soccer community that they’ve helped pay for the fan to extend his trip. It's perhaps another sign of soccer's growth in America, as is the news that Chicago’s fan experience is now too big for Grant Park.
8.  STOPPING MESSI
If the US should advance, they’ll face the winner of the days other game: Argentina vs Switzerland (12 pm ET, ESPN, Univision in the US, CBC in Canada). Can Lionel Messi continue his fine goal scoring form or can the Swiss find a way to neutralise him?
9. C’MON REF
Mark Geiger became the first American to referee a World Cup knockout game on Monday when he took charge of France's win over Nigeria. Most observers agreed he put in another good performance, but one, in particular, did not: the coach of the losing team.
10. CUTEST COUPLE?
Kyle Beckerman’s importance for the US is being felt just as keenly by the national team as his absence is by Real Salt Lake and while the US’ number 15 is proving to be a national sensation, does the recently married midfielder also have a claim as the World Ciup's most attractive couple.
11. KAKA HAS LANDED
The final pieces are falling into place ahead of Kaka’s move to Orlando City. The Brazilian star officially left AC Milan on Monday and, with the soon to be MLS club scheduling a press conference for Tuesday, Kaka arrived in Orlando on Monday evening.
11. MAKE SOME ROOM
With the international transfer window set to open again it seems that a couple of clubs are moving to clear some space on their rosters, with the Chicago Fire waiving Giuseppe Gentile and Sporting Kansas City releasing Alex Martinez.
12. DYNAMO JERSEY SPONSOR
The Houston Dynamo are scheduled to make an announcement on Tuesday with many speculating that it will involve a new jersey sponsor.
13. ETIHAD AIRWAYS PLAYER OF THE MONTH
There weren't many MLS games in June, but five players stood out and are nominated for the Etihad Airways Player of the Month for June. Who gets your vote?
14. BOYD WONDER
While Terrence Boyd may not have made the World Cup squad, the US international is officially on the move, heading from Rapid Vienna in Austria back home to Germany and Red Bull Leipzig, sister club of the New York Red Bulls.
15. LO SIENTO
There’s nothing wrong with a bit of playful banter between nations during the World Cup but Dutch Airline KLM soon realized they had gone too far following a hugely negative reaction to a tweet wishing "adios" to Mexico's team. The airline has since apologized.
